6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

Building upon the successes and lessons from our 2024 campaign, we aim to deepen the Hausa-speaking community's engagement with human rights and environmental topics on Wikimedia projects. Last year, we successfully created and improved over 3215 articles, trained more than 50 participants, and fostered increased awareness of environmental rights. However, we also identified areas for improvement, such as the need for enhanced support for new editors and better internet connectivity during training sessions.

Challenges Identified

  • Limited access to information about human rights and environmental issues in the Hausa language.
  • Underrepresentation of these topics on Hausa Wikipedia.
  • Need for sustained support for new editors to retain their engagement.
  • Technical challenges, including internet connectivity issues during training sessions.

Our Approach for 2025 1, Enhanced Training and Support:

  • Organize comprehensive training sessions, both online and in-person, focusing on Wikipedia editing skills, with special attention to human rights and environmental content.
  • Implement a mentorship program pairing new editors with experienced Wikimedians to provide ongoing support.

2, Content Development:

  • Launch a month-long writing contest to encourage the creation and improvement of articles related to health, environment, and human rights in Hausa.
  • Focus on documenting local plant and animal species on Wikidata in the Hausa language.

3, Community Engagement:

  • Conduct outreach programs in Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, and Jigawa States to recruit new participants, especially targeting underrepresented groups.
  • Collaborate with local experts and institutions to provide authoritative information and resources.

4, Technical Improvements:

  • Address internet connectivity issues by selecting venues with reliable internet access and providing necessary technical support during training sessions.
7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
  • Online Launch and Training Session:

We will begin the project with a virtual training to introduce participants to the campaign theme – Human Rights, Health, and the Environment. This session will also provide basic Wikipedia editing skills for new editors.

  • Four Physical Training Workshops:

We will organize one in-person training session in each of the following states: Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, and Jigawa. Each workshop will:

  • Introduce new editors to Wikipedia
  • Explain the importance of documenting human rights and environmental topics
  • Teach how to create and improve articles in Hausa Wikipedia
  • One Month Writing Contest:

After the trainings, we will run a month long online contest where participants will create and improve Hausa Wikipedia articles related to health, the environment, and human rights. Contributions will be tracked using a campaign dashboard.

  • Online Closing Ceremony and Award Announcement:

At the end of the project, we will hold a virtual closing event to celebrate contributions, announce the winners of the contest, and share lessons learned.

  • Partnership and Community Engagement:

We will invite experts in environment and human rights to give talks during each physical event, as we did in 2023 and 2024 when we invited professionals from Ahmadu Bello University. This will help participants understand the real-world importance of the topics. We will also collaborate with experienced Hausa Wikimedians to serve as trainers and mentors, ensuring participants are guided and supported throughout the project.

  • Documentation and Reporting:

We will document all activities through photos, dashboard reports, social media updates and Metawiki Landing page. A final report will be shared with the community and funders.
