6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

The main change we aim to bring through the Wiki for Human Rights project is to increase awareness and understanding of human rights issues related to the environment, such as protection of the environment and reduction of pollution, among the Hausa-speaking community. The challenges we seek to address include limited access to information about human rights and environmental issues in the Hausa language, as well as a lack of representation of these topics on the Hausa Wikipedia. Our approach are:

  1. Build knowledge about human rights and the environment in Hausa language.
  2. Build the knowledge of local participants on how to contribute human rights and environment content to wikimedia projects.
  3. Build knowledge of participants and the public about local plant and animal species on Wikidata in Hausa language.

By empowering editors with the necessary skills and knowledge, we aim to foster the creation of high-quality content in Hausa language related to human rights and the environment, thus promoting greater awareness and understanding within the Hausa-speaking community.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

1. Build knowledge about human rights and the environment in Hausa language.

  • Organize writing contest to engage new and old contributors to translate human rights and environment content on English Wikipedia to Hausa language, as well as add the Hausa names for Nigerian plant and animal species on Wikidata.

2. Build the knowledge of local participants on how to contribute human rights and environment content to wikimedia projects.

  • Organize local physical and online training sessions for participants to learn how to contribute Human rights and environment topics on Hausa Wikipedia. Participants would also be supported to benefit from the different capacity building sessions organized by the campaign for the African region and globally.

3. Build knowledge of participants and the public about local plant and animal species on Wikidata in Hausa language.

  • Organize Wikidatathons that would help participants learn about Nigerian plants and animal species and their Hausa names and awareness on the importance of building such local knowledge in Hausa language.
8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

The team consists of,

Her role involves mentoring and inspiring female students to participate in the project, thereby enhancing diversity and inclusivity in the community.

All four organizers facilitate events in both Zaria and Kano. All team members are volunteers dedicated to promoting human rights through their work on Wikimedia projects.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

Target participants for this project are Hausa Wikipedia editors mainly from Kano and Zaria as well as other editors that will participate for online trainings and writing contest, specifically those interested in contributing to the #WikiForHumanRights Campaign. I will engage them through social media platforms, primarily WhatsApp groups dedicated to Wikimedia editing and the promotion of Hausa language content.

Before the activities, I will reach out to these editors through targeted invitations to join the project's WhatsApp group. In this group, I will provide updates, share relevant resources, and foster discussions to build excitement and engagement leading up to the campaign.

During the activities, the WhatsApp group will serve as a central hub for communication and support. I will actively participate in the group, providing guidance, answering questions, and facilitating discussions to ensure editors feel supported and motivated throughout the contest.

After the activities, I will continue to follow up with participants through the WhatsApp group, providing feedback on their contributions, celebrating achievements, and soliciting input for future initiatives. Additionally, I will encourage ongoing collaboration and knowledge sharing within the group to sustain momentum and foster a sense of community among Hausa Wikipedia editors dedicated to human rights advocacy.

11. How did you discuss the idea of your project with your community members and/or any relevant groups? Please describe steps taken and provide links to any on-wiki community discussion(s) about the proposal. (required) You need to inform the community and/or group, discuss the project with them, and involve them in planning this proposal. You also need to align the activities with other projects happening in the planned area of implementation to ensure collaboration within the community.

Before finalizing the project proposal, I engaged with various stakeholders to discuss the idea and ensure alignment with existing initiatives. Here are the steps taken:

1. Internal Team Discussion: I convened meetings with my project team to brainstorm ideas and assess the feasibility and relevance of the proposed project. Through these discussions, we refined our objectives and strategies to align with the goals of promoting digital literacy and enhancing participation in the #WikiForHumanRights Campaign.

2. Communication with Hausa Wikimedians User Group: To avoid duplication of efforts and ensure collaboration within the Wikimedia community, I reached out to User:em-mustapha one of the leaders of Hausa Wikimedians User Group. We discussed the project idea and confirmed that it complements existing activities rather than overlapping with them. This collaboration ensures that our efforts are cohesive and maximize impact.

3. As part of our efforts to engage with broader Wikimedia communities, we reached out to the Africa Anglophone regional coordinator for the Wiki For Human Rights campaign. Our aim was to foster collaboration and seek support for our project, ensuring alignment with campaign goals and leveraging regional expertise to maximize impact.

4. We have proactively promoted our upcoming project by adding it to the campaign community event table on Meta Wiki. This ensures broader visibility and engagement within the Wikimedia community, inviting participation and collaboration from interested stakeholders.

Through these collaborative efforts, we ensured that our project proposal is well-informed, aligned with community priorities, and poised to make a meaningful contribution to advancing digital literacy and human rights awareness in Northern Nigeria.

Learning and metrics

[edit]
17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

The project aims to assess several key areas of impact, including the improvement of human rights and environmental articles on Hausa Wikipedia, the training of participants in basic Wikipedia editing skills, and the dissemination of awareness about both Wikipedia and environmental rights.

Firstly, we seek to evaluate the extent to which the project enhances the quality and quantity of human rights and environmental articles on Hausa Wikipedia. By tracking changes in article content, depth, and accuracy, we aim to measure the project's contribution to enriching the knowledge base available to Hausa-speaking communities on these critical topics.

Secondly, the project focuses on equipping participants with essential skills in editing Wikipedia. Through structured training sessions and hands-on practice, participants will learn how to navigate Wikipedia's interface, contribute content, and adhere to community guidelines. By evaluating participants' proficiency before and after the training, we aim to assess the effectiveness of our educational efforts.

Furthermore, the project seeks to raise awareness about Wikipedia among target communities. By promoting the platform's accessibility and utility as a source of reliable information, we aim to encourage broader engagement and participation in content creation and editing. Through outreach activities, informational materials, and online campaigns, we will measure the project's success in increasing awareness and usage of Wikipedia among Hausa speakers.

Finally, the project aims to raise awareness about environmental rights within the community. By incorporating educational materials, workshops, and discussions on environmental issues and rights, we aim to foster greater understanding and advocacy for environmental protection. Through pre- and post-program surveys and qualitative feedback, we will assess the project's impact on participants' knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to environmental rights.

By evaluating these key areas of impact, we aim to gain insights into the effectiveness of our project in advancing human rights and environmental awareness on Hausa Wikipedia, empowering participants with editing skills, and promoting awareness about Wikipedia and environmental rights within the community.
