As women Wikipedia editors from the Hausa community, we often face many challenges, some of which are: 1. Lack of women's interest in editing, resulting from inadequate outreach programs for women. 2. Lack of support from colleagues in leading all-women projects' activities. 3. Lack of skills for Hausa Wiki women editors. 4. Lack of Wikipedia content about women or women-related matters.
This project, 'Hausa Wiki Women Retreat 2026: Bridging Gender Gap for Women Contributors,' aims to solve the above-listed problems by providing regular awareness campaigns and training workshops for women editors and potential women recruits. This will raise more awareness about Wikipedia and its sister projects among women in Hausa communities and beyond and provide hands-on editing workshops for women editors to improve content creation as well as referencing and editing skills. This will also provide an avenue for us (women) to lead women projects for better coordination and achieve the Wikimedia 2030 strategic goal of 'ensuring equity in decision-making.'
I have started and led the first 'Hausa Wikiquote #SheSaid Campaign in 2022,' which has been successful in onboarding more women to Hausa Wikipedia and enriching the contents of Hausa Wikiquote in the incubator wiki, as well as improving the skills of our editors. We plan to organize this training workshops by inviting women from secondary schools and tertiary institutions, as well as women-led organizations, and bring our community of women editors together, both experienced and non-experienced, to collaborate, coordinate, and co-work in building our Wiki skills and recruiting new members to create, enhance, and improve the content of Hausa Wikimedia projects, as well as participate in global Wikimedia campaigns and knowledge sharing.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
First, We will start the new year with awareness and outreach campaigns for recruitment. Our first endeavor for the project will be participation in the global Feminism and Folklore event, where we will organize editing workshops to train and equip our community members. This will be followed by celebrations marking International Women's Day on March 8, 2026, during which we will visit schools, institutions of higher learning, and women-led organizations with the objective of recruiting new members and fostering community growth.
After we get our potential recruits and interested participants we will follow up with community editing workshops and training sessions aimed at enhancing the editing skills of our members, with a particular focus on existing and new content pertaining to women concern within the Hausa Wikipedia project. Our objective is to ensure that the contributions and narratives about women are accurately represented and well source.
Lastly, we are launching a content creation drive aimed to empower women members and improve their skills. This will be a month-long contest campaign (Editathon), specifically to encourage women participation and to create and improve contents on Wikimedia projects. Our main goal is to establish a platform (Hausa Wiki Women) where women can disseminate their knowledge and editing skills, expertise to connect with like-minded individuals (colleagues). We are enthusiastic about this endeavor and we anticipate a very successful and exceptional content generation from our community.
