After a meeting held by the Hausa Wiktionary sysop (admins) reviewing the previous concluded Hausa Wiktionary annual contest in 2024, the Sysops come up with an amazing idea to organize another continuous contest towards 2026 to keep the contest going. The goal is to encourage more participation from the community and to expand the resources available on the platform. By introducing new themes and challenges, the sysops believe they can inspire creativity and foster a sense of collaboration among contributors. For the year 2026 Hausa Wiktionary Contest the theme for the contest will be announced in the contest page https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Hausa_Wiktionary_annual_contest_activities

For the year 2026, the main goal is set to achieve attraction and full participation among Hausa Wiktionary editors in what they have learned for the past four years at the different workshops, training, and meetings held, as well as to expand the scope of the contest through social media handles.

The contest was planned to attract editors with amazing winning prizes, awards, and recognitions, for them to know that their contributions are valued and honored. The contest has goals and objectives, which are as follows:

  • The primary goal is to bridge the gap of inadequate contributions, making sure that editors in Hausa Wiktionary are actively participating, contributing, and engaging for an impactful development on credibility.
  • Part of objective is to create social media handles for Hausa Wikitionary content and to create social media channels for the contest, this will make Hausa Wikitionary explored to the Hausa community on media.
  • Unleashing the skills acquired for the past four years; this is significant to extract the capabilities of editors towards contributing to Hausa Wikitionary on what they have learned, attracted by the prizes set and recognition.
  • Setting winning prizes to honor contributions and recognizing individuals performances for motivation and rapid growth of Hausa Wikitionary.

The Hausa Wikitionary contest will be held annually as usual, started in 2024, and we have achieved almost all of the goals set, Hausa Wikitionary editors will compete to improve Wikitionary in the Hausa language while adhering to Wikitionary's editing guidelines and competition rules. The primary goal of the contest is to create comprehensive Wikitionary Guidelines pages that will assist, direct, and guide Wikitionary editors when editing Hausa Wikitionary. Throughout the contest, editors will adhere to the Wikimedia Wikitionary universal guidelines for Wikitionary editing. To encourage them, the contest will offer them the chance to win incredible prizes that will improve their editing skills and multiply their efforts to improve words in Wikitionary. The contest will be held annually in Hausa Wikitionary and will be overseen by Hausa Wikitionary administrators, who will review the results following the event. Furthermore, participation in the contest requires the current number of Hausa Wikitionary editors, whom we have trained and mentored as administrators. Furthermore, the contest will provide them with the necessary information, resources, support, appropriate skills, and capacity-building engagement to help them rapidly expand Hausa Wikitionary. The contests will also include training sessions to help participants improve their Hausa Wiktionary editing skills. The contest will change the goal of collecting a large number of words in Hausa Wikitionary. It will also provide Hausa Wikitionary editors with data, prizes, recognition, and stipends. The first five runners-up will receive gifts, awards, certificates, and recognition.

There has never been a contest before we started in 2024, currently there is no taking place or ongoing in Hausa Wikitionary, as a result we planned to keep the contest active and better in 2026, this will solve the problem of lack of practicing and lack of making contributions to Hausa Wikitionary to support and motivate editors. Moreover, the fact that there are so many editors in Hausa Wikitionary especially the ones we have trained, we want to make sure that we demonstrates a method of motivation that will be unleashed to encouraging editors to advance Hausa Wikitionary. There are now several administrators who will be reviewing the contest. The primary challenge and problem we are attempting to solve is to provide editors with assistance, such as data support, throughout the contest and to win incredible prizes that will boost their efforts in contributing to Hausa Wikitionary. Furthermore, we wanted to address the issue of a delay in the rapid increase of words in Hausa Wiktionary.

First, local Hausa Wikitionary administrators in the Hausa community will design, create an annual contest page for Hausa Wikitionary editors to register for participation, the page will serve as a general page for the contest. The page will include necessary documentation and information that will improve the competition guidelines and approaches. Second, Wikitionary guidelines pages will be improved to help editors understand the fundamental needs and in-depth skills required to edit Hausa Wikitionary by adopting that skills which they have acquired.

Secondly, this year we have a well planned strategy to create social media handles channels for Hausa Wikitionary page and for the contest, the pages on social media will be used for campaign and promotion of Hausa Wikitionary words and its activities on Facebook and Instagram only.

Thirdly, training will be provided in the Hausa Wikitionary community to improve the user experience both online and offline. A campaign will be developed and implemented throughout the community to contact existing editors in the Hausa Wikitionary community, this is different from the above mentioned of creating social media platforms, as this will serve as a means of campaign reaching out to editors of Hausa Wikitionary on-wiki.

Fourthly, Awards and prizes will be set categorically from first runner up to third, with special prizes like most images linked, most audio linked, most referencing, and most video linked. Making the prize awards seven. Editors will only said to be a winner when he follows the editing rules, guidelines and contest rules, in accordance with the Wikitionary editing rules and regulations, also based on the rules set for the contest to place as established by the Wikimedia community. The winners will be shared on social media platforms and will be announced on WMF Diff.

In light of the foregoing, we intend to invite the current editors of Hausa Wikitionary to participate in the contest, which will provide them with an unparalleled opportunity to be encouraged and exposed to contributing to Hausa Wikitionary while also winning incredible prizes and learning skills that will improve user experience. As Hausa Wikitionary administrators, we worked tirelessly to improve Hausa Wikitionary by developing new features and combining them to make Hausa Wikitionary more better.

We planned to make improvement to the contest general page to look comprehensive and a guiding page for the coming contest and the next contest to come consecutively. Also to create 5 newly guidelines pages for Wikitionary editors and to improve another four, as well as to organize contest-related events online and offline; part of which will be a meet-up with several Wikitionary editors to discuss the progress of Hausa Wikitionary and to establish effective collaboration that will improve Hausa Wikitionary activities, the meeting will be hold in three different occasions, Details about the above four activities can be found here https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Hausa_Wiktionary_annual_contest_activities
