This project continues the 2023 Homographs Harmony in Hausa Wiktionary initiative, which identified and documented Hausa words that share identical spellings but differ in pronunciation and meaning. Building on that foundation, the 2026 phase aims to add audio pronunciation clips to Hausa Homographs entries to illustrate these tonal and phonetic differences clearly. For instance this word kara has 5 different pronunciation and meaning, adding an audio clip to each word can have very positive and meaningful outcomes, especially for learners and language documentation. And they are hundreds of such Homographs words in Hausa language.
The project will focus on:
Recording high-quality audio clips of native Hausa speakers pronouncing each documented homograph in its distinct forms.
Uploading these recordings to Wikimedia Commons and linking them to corresponding Hausa Wiktionary entries.
Expanding the list of homographs, verifying tonal distinctions with linguistic experts, and ensuring accurate transcription and pronunciation data.
Training community members on recording, uploading, and integrating audio files on Wikimedia projects.
By introducing sound to Hausa Wiktionary, this project will make it a more comprehensive linguistic resource — supporting Hausa language learners, researchers, and the general public in understanding tonal distinctions that are difficult to convey through text alone.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Create a list of homographs that need audio pronunciation and contextual improvement on Hausa Wiktionary.
2. Audio Recording Sessions:
Record accurate audio pronunciations for each homograph with the help of native Hausa speakers, ensuring clear distinction between different meanings and tones.
Edit and prepare the audio files for upload according to Wikimedia Commons standards.
3. Wiktionary Editing and Upload:
Upload the recorded audio pronunciations to Wikimedia Commons. Integrate the audio into corresponding Hausa Wiktionary entries with clear formatting and pronunciation labels.

The idea for Homographs Harmony II was developed as a continuation of the previous Homographs Harmony project, based on feedback and interest from Hausa Wiktionary contributors who wanted to expand the work by adding audio pronunciations to homograph entries.
To ensure inclusiveness and community participation, I discussed the project idea through several steps:

Shared the idea on the Hausa Wiktionary community discussion page to gather opinions about adding audio features and improving pronunciation documentation.
2. Discussion within the Hausa Wikimedia User Group:
Presented the proposal in the Hausa Wikimedia User Group on WhatsApp and Telegram groups, where active members supported the idea and volunteered to assist with training and audio recording.
3. Previous Project Participants:
Contacted contributors from the Homographs Harmony I project who gave valuable feedback and suggestions on how to make the second phase more impactful.

[edit]- 17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)
Through Homographs Harmony II, we hope to gain deeper understanding and practical experience in the following areas:
1. Integrating Audio into Wiktionary Entries
Learn the most effective ways to record, upload, and link audio pronunciations for language entries on Wiktionary, especially in local languages like Hausa.
Understand the technical and licensing processes required to ensure audio files meet Wikimedia Commons standards.
2. Improving Linguistic Representation in Wikimedia Projects
Discover how documenting pronunciation can improve the accuracy, accessibility, and educational value of Hausa Wiktionary.
Learn how users interact with audio content and how it supports language learning.
3. Community Engagement and Capacity Building
Learn strategies to motivate new volunteers, especially Hausa speakers, to contribute consistently to Wiktionary and Wikimedia Commons.
Understand what kinds of training and support help contributors feel confident with audio and linguistic content creation.
4. Sustainability and Collaboration
Identify ways to sustain the project after its completion by building partnerships with linguists, educators, and Wikimedia communities.
Learn how to document project results effectively so other language communities can replicate the model.
Ultimately, the project will help me and the Hausa Wikimedia community learn how to combine written and spoken language documentation to make open knowledge richer and more inclusive.
