5. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign, project, or event? If so, please select the relevant project or campaign. (required)

Other (please specify) Language documentation and preservation.

6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

The change I want to bring is to make Wikipedia more inclusive by making knowledge available in the Ibibio language, which has over 7 million speakers but remains underrepresented on Wikimedia platforms. This will support knowledge diversification and contribute to preserving the language for future generations. The main challenges are the risk of language extinction, especially among young people, and the lack of reliable knowledge resources in Ibibio online. Although Ibibio is widely spoken in the Niger Delta region, contributions to the Ibibio Wikipedia incubator have been very low for more than two years and inactive for over a year until April 2025, when I started contributing to the Ibibio Wikipedia incubator. I have also translated the Campaign Events in Ibibio from 0% to 48% in Translatewiki. I noticed that past contributions did not have references, wikilinks, and were not up to date. An example is: https://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wp/ibb/Davido

Here's an example of my contribution with wikilinks and references: https://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wp/ibb/Ango_Abdullahi

To address these challenges, the project will focus on training new contributors, encouraging native speakers to create and translate content in Ibibio, and building awareness about the importance of language preservation through Wikimedia platforms. By doing this, the project will bridge the knowledge gap and increase the visibility of Ibibio in the global knowledge space.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

We have begun local awareness efforts to interest new contributors and partnered with Ibibio Alive Enterprise (a language school affiliated with the National Institute for Nigerian Languages - NINLAN).

My team and I paid a courtesy visit to His Eminence, Ntenyin (Dr.) Solomon Daniel Etuk, CFR, the Oku Ibom Ibibio (Patriarch of Ibibio land) and President-General of the Akwa Ibom State Traditional Rulers Council, at the Traditional Rulers Council Chambers in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

We introduced our community of Wikimedia volunteers in Akwa Ibom and shared what we do, documenting topics about Akwa Ibom, preserving the Ibibio language, and updating biographies of notable leaders. During the visit, we also spoke about our upcoming Ibibio Wikipedia Outreach and sought the Council’s support. His Eminence welcomed the idea, commended our efforts, and promised to help connect us with indigenous people who can write the Ibibio language well to support the project.

Target participants are students of Ibibio Alive Enterprise, Indigenes, and students of the Department of Linguistics (Studying Ibibio), University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

A WhatsApp group will be created for the project, and we will follow up and communicate in the group
