This project aims to transform final-year students at Abdulkadir Kure University, Minna into active Wikipedia editors dedicated to preserving indigenous languages using Wikipedia as a practical digital tool. This represents the first structured advocacy and capacity-building initiative at the university focused on language preservation through Wikimedia projects, in a community that hosts students from numerous linguistic backgrounds and the core mandate of Wikipedia is to ensure languages are preserved from heading to extinction. ‎ ‎The key challenge is that while students are native speakers or learners of indigenous languages, they lack awareness, skills support to document and preserve these languages digitally. Wikipedia is often viewed as unreliable for academic work, leading to missed opportunities to use it for credible language documentation and knowledge sharing. As a result, valuable linguistic knowledge remains underrepresented online and at risk of being lost. ‎ ‎To address this, the project will engage educators and train final-year students through guided awareness and hands-on editing sessions focused on language documentation, reliable sourcing, and Wikipedia quality standards. With mentorship and follow-up support, students will become long-term contributors who actively preserve indigenous languages on Wikipedia while strengthening their academic, and digital literacy skills.

Planned Activities ‎ ‎The project will begin with advocacy and engagement with the Linguistics Department at Abdulkadir Kure University, Minna, to align Wikipedia-based activities with academic goals and language preservation objectives. ‎ ‎We will organize an introductory orientation for final-year students to introduce Wikipedia, its role in documenting and preserving indigenous languages, and its quality standards, including verifiability, reliable sourcing, and neutrality. ‎ ‎This will be followed by structured, hands-on training sessions where students will learn how to create and improve language-related articles on Wikipedia, properly reference linguistic and academic sources, and write encyclopedic content that meets Wikipedia’s policies. ‎ ‎Students will participate in guided editing sessions and working collaboratively to document indigenous languages, dialects, and linguistic topics, while receiving mentorship and real-time feedback from experienced Wikimedians. ‎ ‎To ensure sustainability, active participants will be supported through mentorship, peer learning, and follow-up engagement, with the goal of retaining them as long-term Wikipedia editors dedicated to preserving languages beyond the project period. ‎
