Grants:Programs/Wikimedia Community Fund/Rapid Fund/Improving the Citation Function on Vietnamese Wikipedia (ID: 22987458)/Final Report
Application type: Standard application
Part 1: Project and impact
1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)
Overall, I have achieved the main objective of this project, which was to create configuration files for 80 Vietnamese news websites.
These configurations were written in Zotero's translators format, making them easy to integrate into VisualEditor or other tools.
During the project, in order to simplify the process of writing translators, I developed a software tool named Scaffolded, built with NextJS and deployed on Toolforge. Scaffolded made it much easier to create and test translators.
After completing the 80 translators, I set up a Citoid server called Citoidx and deployed it on Toolforge. On the Vietnamese Wikipedia side, I created a gadget, also named Citoidx. The server and gadget components of Citoidx were connected, enabling users to take advantage of these translator configurations.
The list of 80 websites with completed configurations has been documented on Vietnamese Wikipedia, and I also kept a short log describing the project's implementation process.
Once the project was completed, I announced its release in a community discussion space, allowing others to learn about it and use it in their daily article editing work.
2. Documentation of your impact. Please use space below to share links that help tell your story, impact, and evaluation. (required)
Share links to:
- Project page on Meta-Wiki or any other Wikimedia project
- Dashboards and tools that you used to track contributions
- Some photos or videos from your event. Remember to share access.
You can also share links to:
- Important social media posts
- Surveys and their results
- Infographics and sound files
- Examples of content edited on Wikimedia projects
The project's introduction page is available here: vi:User:Plantaest/Cải thiện chức năng chú thích, where I listed the Vietnamese news sources for which configurations were written.
After the project was completed, I released it to the community here: vi:Wikipedia:Thảo luận#Nâng cấp chức năng chú thích tự động với Citoidx, through which I received valuable feedback.
Additionally, share the materials and resources that you used in the implementation of your project. (required)
For example:
- Training materials and guides
- Presentations and slides
- Work processes and plans
- Any other materials your team has created or adapted and can be shared with others
I documented the project implementation process on this page: vi:User:Plantaest/Cải thiện chức năng chú thích/Nhật ký.

Part 2: Learning
4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)
You can recall these learning questions below: With this project, I hope to gain a deeper understanding of how the citation function in VisualEditor works and how to improve it for long-term benefits to the Vietnamese Wikipedia community.
Overall, through this project, I gained a deeper understanding of the VisualEditor citation tool, as well as Zotero and Citoid – areas I had rarely explored before. Although this knowledge may not seem substantial, I believe it will be valuable for me in continuing to develop useful software for the community in the future.
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
I did not encounter anything unusual or surprising while carrying out this project, although I did spend considerably more time on it than originally planned due to some personal matters.
6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)
I wrote the project's introduction page on Vietnamese Wikipedia and created a discussion post to announce its release. I believe these are sufficient for people to understand what I have accomplished.
Part 3: Metrics
7. Wikimedia Metrics results. (required)
In your application, you set some Wikimedia targets in numbers (Wikimedia metrics). In this section, you will describe the achieved results and provide links to the tools used.
