Esan West is one of the eighteen local government areas (counties) that make up Edo State in Nigeria. Despite its wealth of cultural heritage, history, intellectual potential (home to Ambrose Alli University and Glorious Vision University), and youthful population, it remains largely invisible on Wikimedia platforms. Furthermore, amongst the most important cultural identities of the people of Esan West, [Igbulu attire|Igbulu attire] doesn’t have an article on the English Wikipedia; notable towns and people are either not well sourced/undocumented or are stub articles such as this, this, this and this.
This is as a result of the lack of awareness about the potentials of Wikimedia projects among youths, educators, students, and cultural custodians in Esan West in documenting their culture and history for visibility on the internet for the democratisation of indigenous knowledge. Moreover, there is limited participation due to the absence of localised mentorship, skills training, and community-building activities. This knowledge gap risks further marginalisation of the Esan content in the global knowledge movement.
To bring about change, calculated awareness drives and hands-on training (physical and online) focused on editing and content creation with a focus on Wikipedia, Wikidata and Commons contributions. To ensure sustainability and continuity, a community will be created to provide mentorship and support, periodic online meetups and editathons. We will explore collaborating with student unions in creating fan clubs in the university within Esan West.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
The planned project activities are:
Awareness and Recruitment: Awareness drives using social media to promote the project to prospective participants and pre-assessment selection of participants and partners (higher institutions). The participants will be onboarded and introduced to the Wikimedia projects: Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. Highlighting the Friendly Safe Place Policy, will provide participants with the project goals, action plans, and deliverables.
Training Sessions: Training will be both online and in-person, to be facilitated by experienced wikimedians and involve offering practical training on Wikipedia, Wikidata editing, and how to contribute multimedia files to Wikimedia Commons and policies governing content contribution.
Edit-a-thon: Participants will gain hands-on editing experience focused on adding reliable references to Wikipedia articles, Wikidata Items and Commons uploads, enhancing the visibility of Esan West’s cultural heritage, and ensuring active contributions to Wikimedia platforms. Top contributors will be awarded gift prizes.
Surve: There will be post-training assessments to measure participants' knowledge and skills acquired and measure the overall impact of the project. This process will also identify areas for improvement, ensure that the activities remain responsive to participants' needs, and help guide future Wikimedia training initiatives.
Mentorship: A WhatsApp group community will be created to serve as a platform for continuous engagement and support to participants during and after the project phase. Further strengthen our resolve to not just create but also sustain a community of open knowledge enthusiasts.
