Bono/Abron is an emerging language which has native speakers of more than 1.4 million people in the Bono Regions of Ghana and the diaspora, but only a few know about its existence on Wikipedia and its sister projects. The Bono Wikimedians Community was then established to help preserve the sum of all knowledge in the Bono dialect. Since its inception, members of the community have being trained on how to localize the Bono Wikipedia incubator on Translatewiki and to contribute on the Incubator (https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Special:Translate?filter=translated&action=translate&language=abr&group=core-0-mostused). This project will recruit new editors and introduce them to the Bono Wikimedians Community (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Bono_Wikimedians_Community) to Wikipedia and its sister projects and encourage them to contribute to their local wiki which is the Abron/Bono Wikipedia Incubator. - (https://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wp/abr)
The digital world is a great way for people to connect and share ideas. But it also spreads unfair beliefs, especially about women (feminism) and folklore. This often happens in places like the Brong Ahafo and Bono Regions of Ghana. In folklore and culture, for example, the work of women is often ignored or not seen as important.
To help address this issue, we are planning to hold an Introduction to Wikipedia through Folklore & Feminism Edit-a-thon in Sunyani, Bono Region of Ghana. The goal is to fight these unfair systems and help people hear the voices of women and folklore.
Our main aim is to make women more visible by writing and editing Wikipedia articles in Ghanaian languages like Abron/Bono. We will help more people in the Bono Regions of Ghana and around the world learn about these women and the great work they do.
Fix gender bias in online content: We will work to correct unfair information about women on Wikipedia. This means making sure those women’s achievements are clearly and fairly shown in articles.
We plan to hold online training sessions to teach both new and existing community members how to edit and translate English Wikipedia articles into the Bono Dialect. To make real change and solve these problems, we will also organise a series of edit-a-thons and workshops. These events will focus on Folklore and women (feminism) in areas where people speak Abron/Bono.
At these events, native speakers, along with both new and experienced Wikipedia editors, will come together. They will be trained to create new Wikipedia articles in the Abron or Bono language. We will also enhance existing articles on folklore and women by incorporating more detailed information in Abron or Bono.
Our planned strategies and activities are based on good examples from digital activism, community work, and sharing knowledge. They are made to be flexible, open to everyone, and effective—even when resources are limited.
We follow this method because: Training and Skills Building: We give full training to help people become confident Wikipedia editors and strong supporters of gender equality. Research shows that good training helps people gain skills, share knowledge, and become better with digital tools.
Outreach and Awareness: Reaching out to others and spreading the word is crucial for engaging diverse groups and fostering public interest. By using social media and other online tools, we can connect with many people and encourage them to take part.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
The main activities include: We will hold a two-month edit-a-thon contest to create and improve articles about women and folklore on the Abron/Bono Wikipedia Incubator.
This edit-a-thon will help keep the Bono language alive and promote it as an essential part of Ghana’s culture.
Writing the articles in Bono will make them easier to understand for local people, especially those who don’t speak English well.
The edit-a-thon will also shine a light on the work of African women, who are often left out of the media and history books. By telling their stories, we give them the respect they deserve and inspire the next generation.
Creating or updating Wikidata items for missing entries, labels and descriptions in the Bono dialect
Making or improving Wikidata items about African women is very important for several reasons:
- It helps more people find information about these women through search engines and websites.
- When Wikidata items are connected to Wikipedia articles and other sources, search results become more complete and accurate.
- Wikidata keeps information in an organised way that lasts, which helps protect and share cultural history.
- Adding detailed information on Wikidata also supports future research and learning about African women.
Upload pictures of African women and folklore related to Wikimedia Commons.
Sharing pictures of African women and folklore on Wikimedia Commons is essential for many reasons:
- Pictures help people see and better understand the work these women do.
- When we upload them to Wikimedia Commons, the images become free for anyone in the world to use.
- Teachers, students, and researchers can use these pictures to learn more about Ghanaian women, African women and folklore.
Pictures can make Wikipedia articles better and easier to understand.
Working with Partners:
- We will team up with local groups like the Bonoman Institute and the Bono Regional Centre for National Culture to get their knowledge and support.
- We will also work with the Bonoman Institute to help with more Bono translation guidelines and advice.
- We will also work with the Feminism and Folklore team and the Ghanaian Pidgin Wikimedians Community for technical support.
