Grant Proposal[edit]

M. Please state the title of your proposal. This will also be the Meta-Wiki page title.

Introducing Wikipedia to Fante Wikimedia Community

Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)

Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

Fante is spoken by at least 2 million people in Ghana and but only a few know about Wikipedia and its sister projects. Our recent project (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fante_translatewiki_Project) was targeted at localizing the Fante Wikipedia incubator on translatewiki and participants were eager to learn more and contribute to Wikipedia and its sister projects. This project will introduce and recruit new editors and also engage new editors of the newly Fante Wikimedia community (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fante_Wikimedia_Community) to Wikipedia and its sister projects and encourage them to contribute to their local wiki which is the Fante Wikipedia Incubator.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

This project aims at building the capacity of the community members by organizing 3 in-person training workshops and 3 online for new and existing editors of the community. Fante is spoken by at least 2 million people in Ghana. It is principally spoken in the central and southern regions of Ghana as well as in settlements in other regions in western Ghana and so this approach is chosen to recruit and train new editors and also to improve the retention rate of new and experienced editors who joined the community

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

The Fante Wikimedia Community have completely translated the Most Used MediaWiki statements and some gadgets into fante. In view of that, we will like to organize 3 workshops for the three different units of people leaving in different Cities (Cape Coast, Takoradi and Accra) since it's a cultural group with diverse and wide settlements.

The training is to be organized two times; one in person workshop and an online reinforcement training for each of the 3 three cities to properly equip them with the needed skills about how to edit on Wikipedia, wikidata and Wikimedia commons.

These strategies are adopted because these community members are still very new to Wikimedia projects and the in-person workshop would help encourage them to join the world of openness. After which, we would be sure to get good results with online trainings.

4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

Other (please specify)

The contents of the programme will prioritize bridging the information gap and language barrier by documenting them on the English and Fante Wikipedia. Again, the content on men against women is vast which means that we have a lot of women who have reckoned forces with men but are not represented on line and we seek to change that narrative. Our recent project hosted over 20 females

We wish to apply the strategies below to retain participants after your proposal is implemented;
