Islamic Heritage Sites in Jordan on the Wiki projects - Arabization and the Wiki open-access
- Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)
Local
- Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.
- R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.
- 1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.
The project aims to focus on increasing Arabic digital content about a significant topic “Islamic Heritage Sites in Jordan”, and to be added to Wiki projects. It is expected to have more than 450 notable articles with accurate references and rich rare content (detailed text, thousands of images, architectural drawings, and historical documents).
- 2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.
The projects contain, in alphabetical order, sites of mosques, tombs of the Prophet Muhammed’s companions, and other memorials of Jordan’s rich Islamic history. All of these sites are categorized under two Jordanian geodatabase systems: JADIS and MEGA-Jordan, while most of the sites have accurate coordinates, connected with Google Maps. Therefore, it is possible to search the sites by map location or by governorates.
- 3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?
The project in its Arabized version is supposed to be connected with Wiki projects: Wikipedia, Wiki data, and Wikimedia Commons, where thousands of rare photos, architectural drawings, historical documentation, and huge data and text will be added after the translation part into Arabic (around 450 articles classified by location). It is a new version of the English last one published on the "Edit" platform under the Creative Commons license.
- 4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

- 6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.
The project can be considered one of the most important initiatives that will record the Islamic heritage of this region of the world in the Arabic Language over the course of 13 centuries, with open access.
- 7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.
Education, Culture, heritage or GLAM , Open Technology
- 8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?
Digital Access
- 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?
It would be beneficial to engage with individuals who are interested in Islamic heritage and history, specifically related to Jordan and the Arab Region. This could include historians, scholars, students, and individuals with a passion for cultural heritage preservation. Following up with participants after the activities can be done through regular updates and progress reports, highlighting notable contributions and achievements. To address the gap in contributions and reach underrepresented groups, it may be helpful to collaborate with organizations and communities focusing on diversity and inclusion. I can also actively seek out individuals from underrepresented groups and provide resources and support to help them participate in the project. For example, I can offer translation services or training in the Arabic language for heritage issues in Jordan and surrounding countries. To retain participants after the proposal is implemented, it is important to continue providing opportunities for engagement and contribution.
- 10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?
I have to ensure that all the information I add is accurate and reliable, with proper citations and references. Also, I have to consider the accessibility of the information I am adding and try to make it available in multiple formats, such as text and images.
- 11. Please tell us about how you have let your Wikimedia communities know about the planned activities and this proposal.
