Rapid Fund Final Report

Application type: Standard application

Part 1: Project and impact

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

As soon as this project was approved and funds accessed, my team and I began to organize ourselves, contacting all those needed to coordinate the event from Wukari, the town where the event took place.

We had the event venue and accommodations for organizers booked and paid for, and the graphics created for the event.

We then sent out the graphics on our social media handles created for the event, and participants in the WhatsApp group were told to register themselves for the event, which most of them did before the event.

On arrival at Wukari, the event organizing team visited the Aku Uka (paramount ruler) of Wukari, where the group introduced the purpose of their visit alongside members of the Jukun language board, and we were welcomed and given the go-ahead to proceed with our event.

For the next three days, between 20 and 22 February, the participants were taught how to create articles in the Jukun Wapan language, and although the language was not activated on Translatewiki as of the last day of the event, the participants were told to await when it would be so a separate online class could be prepared to teach them that aspect as well.

After the event, we continued to encourage participants to edit the project and should continue doing so until the project leaves the Wikimedia Incubator and even afterwards.

During this project, we learned about the culture of the Jukun people and how much they respect their traditional institutions. We also learned about how much they are interested in documenting their language through the books they brought to the event venue, which was quite encouraging.

Part 2: Learning

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: 1. What level of exposure do the editors have regarding the use of editing tools like computers and smartphones? 2. How much of the Wapan orthography do the editors understand? 3. What is the nature of the browsing network in the area where this community is?

1. I learned that just like in other places in Nigeria, most of the elderly attendees had difficulty operating digital devices, but they were helpful in terms of translations.

2. This event helped me know that about half of the Wapan speakers who attended the event understood the orthography of the language, while the other half were still struggling with it.

3. The browsing network in the venue of our event was quite cooperative. We had a great event with little or no browsing network-related challenges.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

On our way to the town, we were surprised to discover that the bridge across the Benue River linking Ibi and Wukari had not yet been constructed, and we had to journey across it on a ferry boat.

Another was the cultured nature of the people. They were very respectful to traditional leadership and were very composed.

They also have a lot of literary materials, some written in English and Jukun and others in Jukun only. It was quite mind-blowing to discover these, and I hope the same will be translated to Wikipedia editing in the Wikimedia Incubator and Translatewiki so that the Jukun Wikipedia can become a reality in no time.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

I have shared my learnings on the social media handles, as well as got some of the aspects captured in the newspaper publication whose link was attached above.

Part 3: Metrics
