Part 1: Project and impact

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

Implemented Activities and Results Achieved for Kiwix Phase 2 Implemented Activities:

Deployment of Kiwix in Schools – Kiwix offline resources were installed in Benjamin Mkapa Secondary School and Kajengwa Primary School in Tanzania, allowing students and teachers to access Wikipedia and other educational materials without the internet. Activities Involved; Training Workshops for Educators – Conducted training sessions to equip teachers with the skills to use Kiwix effectively in their teaching and to help students navigate the offline resources.

Community Awareness Campaigns – Organized outreach programs to raise awareness among school administrators, parents, and local communities about the benefits of Kiwix in bridging the digital divide.

Technical Support and Maintenance – Provided ongoing support to ensure smooth operation of Kiwix devices in schools, including troubleshooting and updating content repositories.

Results Achieved: Increased access to educational resources for students in underserved areas.

Enhanced teachers’ ability to integrate digital content into their lessons, improving the quality of education.

Positive feedback from students who found Kiwix helpful for independent learning and exam preparation.

Strengthened partnerships with educational institutions and stakeholders to support the sustainability of the project.

Identified challenges such as the need for more localized Swahili content and additional training for educators.

Most Effective Approaches Hands-on Training for Teachers and Students – Practical sessions ensured educators and learners fully understood how to use Kiwix, leading to increased adoption.

Collaboration with Schools and Local Authorities – Engaging school leadership and government education departments helped with smooth implementation and long-term sustainability.

Localized Content and Contextual Relevance – Tailoring educational resources to fit the Tanzanian curriculum made Kiwix more useful for students and teachers.

Technical Support and Follow-ups – Providing post-installation support helped schools overcome initial technical challenges and ensured continued use of the platform.

Part 2: Learning

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: 1.How will students in rural areas access and navigate educational content without internet access using Kiwix? 2.How will the use of Kiwix impact students’ academic performance, critical thinking, and overall learning outcomes? 3.How will teachers and the broader school community utilize Kiwix as an educational tool, and how will it enhance teaching methods and knowledge-sharing? 4.What strategies can help schools sustain the use of Kiwix, and does it promote self-directed learning and local knowledge creation over time? 5.What are the long-term sustainability and scalability prospects for Kiwix in rural schools, and how can it be expanded to reach more communities while maintaining its effectiveness?

1. How will students in rural areas access and navigate educational content without internet access using Kiwix? From the event, we observed that students successfully accessed educational content through: Pre-installed Kiwix servers and devices – Schools were equipped with Kiwix-enabled laptops, loaded with offline educational resources like Wikipedia, Wiktionary, and other educational content.

2. How will the use of Kiwix impact students’ academic performance, critical thinking, and overall learning outcomes? Improved Research Skills – Students learned to search for information independently, improving their ability to analyze topics from multiple sources such a Wikipedia.

Bridging the Digital Divide – Kiwix provided equitable access to knowledge, ensuring students in rural schools had the same learning opportunities as those in urban areas.

3. How will teachers and the broader school community utilize Kiwix as an educational tool, and how will it enhance teaching methods and knowledge-sharing? Professional Development – Educators accessed open educational resources and reference materials for their continuous learning.

4. What strategies can help schools sustain the use of Kiwix, and does it promote self-directed learning and local knowledge creation over time? Student-Led Peer Learning – Encouraging students to teach others how to navigate Kiwix fosters self-directed learning. Content Localization – Schools suggested including more Swahili-language materials to make learning more accessible.

5. What are the long-term sustainability and scalability prospects for Kiwix in rural schools, and how can it be expanded to reach more communities while maintaining its effectiveness? Partnerships with Government & NGOs – Collaboration with education ministries and non-profits can ensure continued funding and support. Device Expansion Programs – Providing more schools with Kiwix-compatible devices will improve access. Teacher & Student Champions – Identifying educators and students to lead Kiwix adoption in their schools.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

Positive Surprises High Enthusiasm and Fast Adoption by Students One of the most surprising and positive outcomes was how quickly students adapted to using Kiwix. Even in schools where digital literacy was initially low, students eagerly explored the offline Wikipedia and other resources, often teaching their peers how to navigate the system.

Lesson Learned: Students are naturally curious and, when given the right tools, they embrace technology for learning faster than expected. This reinforced the importance of making Kiwix more accessible to younger learners and incorporating peer-learning strategies.

Challenges and Negative Surprises Limited Availability of Devices Despite enthusiasm from students and teachers, some schools faced a shortage of Kiwix-compatible devices. This led to students having to share a limited number of computers or tablets, sometimes reducing engagement levels.

Lesson Learned: Future implementations should prioritize strategies for increasing access to devices, such as partnerships with organizations that donate hardware to schools.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

To ensure that the insights from Kiwix Phase 2 are widely shared and contribute to future initiatives, we have developed a comprehensive dissemination strategy. These efforts will help engage Wikimedia communities, educators, and stakeholders to maximize the impact of the project.

One of the primary ways to share our learnings is by organizing community debriefing sessions. These sessions will bring together Tanzania members, teachers, students, and education stakeholders to discuss key findings, challenges, and best practices. The discussions will be held both virtually and in-person to ensure broad participation. A community meeting is being scheduled to showcase the project's impact and gather feedback for future improvements.
