The Kiwix4Schools program introduced the Kiwix Offline tool as a solution to bridge the digital divide in schools located in parts of Tanzania, where access to internet services is limited. By offering an offline repository of learning materials, Kiwix allows students and educators to access critical online resources without the need for an active internet connection. This initiative aims to enhance educational opportunities and provide valuable learning tools to institutions that would otherwise face challenges in incorporating technology into their curriculum. Statistics from the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TRA, 2017) reveal that only 40% of the Tanzanian population has access to and uses the Internet . The lack of widespread internet coverage, coupled with issues of accessibility and the high cost of connectivity, has severely impacted educational institutions across the country. Many schools are unable to leverage online resources for academic purposes, restricting students from conducting independent research and accessing alternative study materials. This lack of access to supplementary educational resources has hindered students' academic progress and limited their ability to fully explore broader learning opportunities. To address the challenges of limited internet access and restricted academic resources, the Kiwix4Schools Wikipedia Pilot Project was conducted in Kisutu Girls Secondary School, Jangwani High School, and Nala Secondary School in Tanzania(https://meta.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Kiwix_Tanzania).

The objective of the study was to determine how Wikimedia learning resources could enhance students' academic performance.

Before the project rollout, only 20% of respondents had heard of Wikipedia, and a mere 6.5% had used any of Wikipedia's platforms, highlighting a significant digital knowledge gap. The pilot study revealed that students found Wikipedia to be more informative, easier to navigate, time-saving, and less expensive compared to traditional learning materials. This feedback emphasized the potential of Wikipedia as an accessible, valuable educational tool for students, especially in regions with limited internet connectivity. To overcome the challenges posed by limited internet penetration, which prevents many students from accessing Wikipedia, the Kiwix4Schools program will be expanded to high schools in rural areas across Tanzania. This initiative aims to provide students with offline access to Wikipedia content, ensuring that educational resources are available even in regions with poor internet connectivity. By extending the program, Kiwix4Schools seeks to empower students with the tools they need to enhance their learning experiences, conduct independent research, and access a wealth of knowledge without reliance on internet access.

Community Engagement and Awareness: Organize awareness campaigns in rural schools to introduce the Kiwix4Schools program. Engage local communities, teachers, and educational stakeholders to explain the importance of Kiwix for offline learning. In-person training Sessions: Provide training for teachers and students on how to use Kiwix to access offline Wikipedia and other educational resources. Train school staff on maintaining and troubleshooting Kiwix devices. Monitoring and Support: Regular follow-up visits to monitor the program's progress, gather feedback, and address any challenges. Offer ongoing support for schools using Kiwix, including updates and additional training if needed.

User:Husseyn Issa: Kiwi4school Certified Trainer,with his skills will be the technical personnel behind installation of the Kiwix Software and workshop Facilitator.


User: Killy95- he has been an active Wikimedian for the past 5 years with editing and organizing skills in the Wikimedia movement. He participated in different Campaigns such as WikiForHuman Rights,1Lib1ref, WikiLoves Africa, Wikiloves Women, Arts and Feminism Campaign also Kiwix4Schools project. He is also a mechanical engineer with certified skills in water management.

The Kiwix4Schools program in rural areas of Tanzania targets a diverse group of participants to ensure its success and sustainability. The primary participants are students from secondary schools, particularly those in rural areas with limited access to the internet and educational materials. Teachers are also key participants, as they will use offline resources from Kiwix to enhance their lessons and improve the learning experience. School administrators, including headteachers and principals, play an important role in overseeing the integration of Kiwix into the curriculum. In addition, the program engages local education authorities to align its goals with national educational policies, ensuring its relevance and support. Lastly, technology partners, such as local IT professionals or volunteers, provide the necessary technical support for setting up and maintaining Kiwix devices in schools. By involving these groups, the program aims to create a supportive ecosystem for improving education in rural Tanzania.
