Main Proposal

[edit]
1. Please state the title of your proposal. This will also be the Meta-Wiki page title.

Korean Wikipedia Ryukyuan Performing Arts Editathon: Bridging the Knowledge Gap

2. and 3. Proposed start and end dates for the proposal.

2026-05-29 - 2026-08-31

4. Where will this proposal be implemented? (required)

Regional (more than one country in the same continent or region) South Korea (Seoul) — primary base for Wikipedia editing, field note production, and online sharing session. Japan (Okinawa) — field observation of Ryukyuan performing arts.

5. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign, project, or event? If so, please select the relevant project or campaign. (required)

Not applicable

6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

URGENT CONTEXT: On May 29, 2026, the applicant travels to Okinawa for a rare private demonstration arranged with Ryukyuan performing artists — the result of months of relationship-building with local cultural scholars. This direct field observation of classical Ryukyuan dances alongside post-annexation forms is a one-time, non-repeatable access point that provides the primary source material for the Wikipedia articles proposed here. This application supports the full research and content creation project that begins with this imminent field observation.

Korean-language Wikipedia has almost no content on Ryukyuan performing arts — one of East Asia's most significant intangible cultural heritage traditions. The article 류큐 예능 (Ryukyuan performing arts) does not exist in Korean. The article 류큐 음악 (Ryukyuan music) existed as a 47-word stub before this project.

Korean-speaking researchers, artists, and students interested in Ryukyuan performing arts find almost nothing in Korean Wikipedia. This is a specific, documented gap: search 류큐 예능 on Korean Wikipedia and you get nothing. Korean-language speakers — over 80 million worldwide — currently have no meaningful Wikipedia entry point into this tradition.

Korea and the Ryukyu Kingdom share a comparable history — both were traditional kingdoms absorbed into Japan through colonialism, and both had performing arts traditions that survived under suppression. Korean performing arts communities have extensively studied their own traditions' survival strategies, but have barely looked at what was happening next door. Filling this Wikipedia gap directly supports cross-cultural understanding of intangible heritage.

This project creates and expands Korean-language Wikipedia articles on Ryukyuan performing arts by combining direct field observation in Okinawa with systematic content creation and a community knowledge-sharing session.

The field research findings will also be presented at ISTR 2026 (International Society for Third-Sector Research, Lisbon, July 2026), bringing these Korean Wikipedia contributions to an international academic audience researching civil society and intangible cultural heritage.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

1. Okinawa field observation (private Ryukyuan arts demonstration) — June 2026 — Primary source material for Wikipedia articles

2. Create 류큐 예능 article (currently nonexistent in Korean Wikipedia) — June 2026 — New article (target: 1,000+ words)

3. Create 쿠미오도리 article (currently nonexistent in Korean Wikipedia) — June 2026 — New article (target: 800+ words)

4. Create 류큐 무용 article (currently nonexistent in Korean Wikipedia) — July 2026 — New article (target: 800+ words)

5. Create 산신 (악기) article (currently nonexistent — "산신" page exists but refers to mountain god) — July 2026 — New article (target: 600+ words)

6. Create 우자가쿠 article (currently nonexistent in Korean Wikipedia) — July 2026 — New article (target: 500+ words)

7. Bilingual field note production (Korean + English) — July 2026 — Free public document

8. Online community sharing session — August 2026 — Event with Korean performing arts researchers and practitioners

Note: The article 류큐 음악 (Ryukyuan music) was already expanded by the applicant in May 2026 (from a 47-word stub to a structured article) as preliminary work demonstrating the project's feasibility.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

Saemyi (최샘이 / SEMI Choi) — Primary editor and project lead. PhD candidate at Sungkyunkwan University (intangible cultural heritage, Namsadang). Performing arts producer with 8+ years experience. ISTR 2026 Lisbon presenter. Wikipedia username: Saemyi. Volunteer.

Local Okinawan arts scholars and researchers — Consultation role. Not Wikipedia editors.

Korean arts community network — Sharing session participants. Potential new Wikipedia contributors.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

Primary: Korean-language Wikipedia readers (80M+ speakers worldwide) who currently find no content when searching for Ryukyuan performing arts topics.

Direct participants: Korean performing arts researchers, producers, and community members attending the online sharing session (estimated 30–50 participants). These are professionals who study traditional arts and intangible cultural heritage.

Engagement: Participants will be recruited through Korean performing arts networks and research communities. The sharing session will explicitly introduce Wikipedia editing and invite participants to contribute. Field notes will be published freely and linked from Wikipedia articles.

Follow-up: Field notes and Wikipedia articles will remain permanently accessible. Participants who create Wikipedia accounts during the session will be encouraged to continue editing.

10. Does your project involve work with children or youth? (required)

No

10.1. Please provide a link to your Youth Safety Policy. (required) If the proposal indicates direct contact with children or youth, you are required to outline compliance with international and local laws for working with children and youth, and provide a youth safety policy aligned with these laws. Read more here.

N/A

11. How did you discuss the idea of your project with your community members and/or any relevant groups? Please describe steps taken and provide links to any on-wiki community discussion(s) about the proposal. (required) You need to inform the community and/or group, discuss the project with them, and involve them in planning this proposal. You also need to align the activities with other projects happening in the planned area of implementation to ensure collaboration within the community.

The project idea was developed through direct engagement with the Korean performing arts research community. The applicant has an established network of Korean traditional arts researchers and producers built through 8+ years of professional work and academic research.

The 류큐 음악 article expansion (May 2026) served as a test and discussion starter — demonstrating that meaningful Korean Wikipedia content on Ryukyuan arts was achievable and valued. The applicant's academic and professional networks have expressed strong interest in a dedicated sharing session on this topic.

No formal on-wiki community discussion has been held yet, as this is an individual proposal. The project will be published on Meta-Wiki upon submission, where community endorsement can be gathered.
