Grants:Programs/Wikimedia Community Fund/Rapid Fund/Local Seminar for GLAM Employees (ID: 22746489)/Final Report
Application type: Standard application
Part 1: Project and impact
1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)
October: We started with finding a venue for the seminar and preparations for the application form, we were trying to find a venue in kind. We finally organized an in-kind venue at the city library “Braka Miladinovci”, at which point we finalized the date of the event as with availability of the venue.
Ana Vishinova and several other volunteers were actively sharing this event to many GLAM employees who would be interested. In the meantime we prepared materials, including the participants’ packet, organized snacks and refreshments.
We came up with a good idea to ask Gorana Gomirac from Wikimedia Serbia to give a presentation on how their organization has managed and improved the coordination with GLAM institutions and employees, in short, how they work with GLAMers in Serbia
November: We finished the preparations of the programme, participants were applying with our form and we held several meetings on the topic of the programme and who will give the lectures.
6th of December was the conference day, we prepared everything and had welcoming volunteers at the front door for the participants who would sign themselves in and took the participants’ packet on their way in. The conference was opened by the library employee, Aleksandra Jurukovska, who greeted everyone in the library’s name and spoke of former collaborations between the library and other Wikipedians. Then Ana Vishinova and Koki Shtrkovski greeted the participants and informed them of the programme for the day. Between the speakers, we had Gorana Gomirac, Ana Vishinova, Zana (from Wikimedia MKD) and Nikola Stojanovski (from Wikimedia MKD). There was a 1 hour training about how to edit Wikipedia, which was led by Koki Shtrkovski, 26 participants created a username and were happy to help improve Wikipedia. While I’m writing this report, after the conference, there are still 3 of them who are actively editing Wikipedia and are taking part in the 1Lib1Ref contest on mk.wiki
The most effective approach to our goal was our continuous support and the promise that we are always available to help the participants in their inclusion in Wikipedia and the Wiki movement.

Part 2: Learning
4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)
You can recall these learning questions below: A main part of the learning process of this seminar will be the needs of GLAM employees, particularly relating to Wikipedia, Wikimedia, etc. But it should be emphasized that the main learning process will be for the GLAM employees who will learn how to edit Wikipedia, add photos to Wikimedia, etc.
We achieved what we aimed for, teaching the GLAM employees how to edit Wikipedia, how to add photos to Wikimedia, as well as giving a fun learning experience that sparked interest in the GLAM employees for the Wiki movement. We learned that there is a necessity for these kinds of activities and to organize them more often.
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
Some of the GLAM employees came prepared, learning before the conference in their own time that their field of study had a content gap on Wikipedia in Macedonian language that they are very willing to contribute to, in order to fulfill this gap in the future. We were surprised and very happy to see them come that prepared.
It also came as a surprise that not every one of the participants was equally interested in creating an account and editing Wikipedia, as some of them came just to listen and hear the lecturers about Wikipedia, but not to edit.
6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)
We shared the event with the community, such as through the website of the affiliation in Macedonia, on Facebook and on meetings in person, such as the gathering for the Wikipedia birthday party.
