4. Where will this proposal be implemented? (required)

Taiwan

5. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign, project, or event? If so, please select the relevant project or campaign. (required)

Other (please specify) The culture of the Pazeh, one of the Plains Indigenous of Taiwan.

6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

Pazeh, one of the Indigenous languages of Taiwan, was once classified by UNESCO as a critically endangered language. Since the passing of the last fluent Pazeh speaker in 2010, the language has faced the imminent risk of extinction. Alongside the language, cultural memories—including traditional food preparation, New Year ceremonies, and contexts where the language was naturally used—have also been disappearing due to the disruption of intergenerational transmission.

This project aims to preserve these precious linguistic and cultural assets through audiovisual documentation and by making them accessible via Wikimedia platforms. We hope to enable the Pazeh community to reconnect with their heritage and to introduce this often-overlooked part of history to a global audience.

Currently, Pazeh is almost entirely absent from formal education and mainstream media, and most young community members have limited exposure to the language. Cultural activities are mostly held in-person and rarely documented in formats that can be preserved or widely shared. By engaging the community in the creation of digital content and uploading it to open platforms, this project seeks to develop a community-centered approach to cultural documentation. We also hope to explore how Wikimedia can serve as a powerful tool for language revitalization and cultural preservation.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

Documenting the traditional making of Alah-kue (Pazeh rice cakes): We will produce a video recording of the full preparation process, with subtitles in Pe̍h-ōe-jī (Taiwanese Romanization) and selected Pazeh vocabulary. This will allow young Pazeh people and non-community members to understand and learn both the cultural significance and basic linguistic elements.

Documenting the 2025 Pazeh New Year Celebration: We will capture both video footage and at least 50 high-quality photographs of the event, then upload them to Wikimedia Commons.
