Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

Workshops: We organized workshops/training sessions to introduce new participants to Wikimedia Commons and build on the knowledge of existing users on how to upload media files and the rules surrounding media uploads on to Wikimedia commons, the creative commons license and how to better create Wikipedia articles on the theme feminism and folklore on the Gurene and Moore Wikipedia. We also trained participants on how to create or improve Wikipedia articles and Wikidata items for the various places we visited and add relevant references.

Photowalk: We embarked on two photowalks where we captured photos of folklore; selected participants came from Dagbani, Gurene and Moore Communities.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

Yes.

During the Wiki Loves Folklore event, we took a number of approaches that we found to be effective in achieving our goals. We worked closely with various Wikimedia communities and affiliates around the world to organize the competition, and we made a concerted effort to engage with participants from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

Another effective strategy was the use of social media to reach out to potential participants and promote the competition. We used the various social media platforms, including Twitter and Facebook, to share information about the competition and encourage people to participate. We also used hashtags to make it easier for people to find and follow the conversation around the competition.

Additionally, we provided extensive support and resources to participants to help them capture high-quality photographs of folk cultures and intangible heritage materials in their regions. In conclusion, our collaborative and inclusive approach helped us to achieve a successful and impactful event.

3. Please use this space to upload media and other files that help tell your story and impact.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Strongly agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Strongly agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Strongly agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Strongly agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

Outreach: We engaged with and reached out to potential participants from underrepresented groups via their co-leads. This was achieved using targeted outreach methods including partnering with relevant organizations, advertising in places where these groups are likely to see it, and collaborating with community leaders to get the word out.

Providing resources: We provided participants with the resources they needed to effectively participate. This included training, support, and guidance to the participants, as well as making sure that they have access to the equipment, all relevant links to the project, and other tools needed to create content.

Creating an inclusive environment: We created an inclusive environment where people from different backgrounds and communities were grouped to embark on the photo walk. The goal was to promote active promotion of the three fundamental pillars of the movement: diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) values, and also help reduce harassment or discrimination and prejudice.

Providing incentives: We provided data allowance to all participants to aid them upload the media files and also set aside special packages such as prizes, recognition, or other rewards to compensate outstanding participants who take part in the competition or created the content. This is particularly effective for our underrepresented groups who may face additional barriers to participation.

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

Photo walks: so many people from the Moore and Gurene communities expressed their desire to participate in the photo walks, but we were only able to select some 20 people for each photowalk. Our target was to upload 200 images but we ended up uploading 5906 images. A whooping 5706 more of our original target. This is a huge achievement! https://w.wiki/6dNS

On upload session; The upload sessions were successfully organized to guide participants on how to upload images on Wikimedia Commons for the contest. Those who were new were guided to create their user accounts at the workshop and to start uploading.

Feminism and Folklore Contest; A successful workshop was organized to train participants on how to edit on Wikipedia. Newbies who did not have wikipedia accounts were guided to create their accounts and to start editing. Participants competed and created/improved a total 120 Gurene and Moore Wikipedia Articles. Some of these articles were developed to meet the standard of being accepted on the fountain tool.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

Some of the participants faced technical difficulties with the Wikimedia Commons platform which involved IP blocks, which led to frustration and difficulty in submitting their entries.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

Our plans for the future is that we will make sure we collect the usernames of interested editors who will want to participate in the contest and then contact Wikimedia admins in advance to exempt the usernames from general IP blockages to allow them to successfully upload their files.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).
