‎In 2025, the Nupe Wikimedians community significantly expanded its activities and developed a targeted initiatives aimed at sustaining community growth and ensuring continuous support for members. A six-month project implemented between September 2025 and February 2026 marked a new chapter of hope, resilience, and determination, strengthening member engagement, skills development, and a sense of belonging within the Wikimedia ecosystem. ‎ ‎Through these activities, we identified key gaps and weaknesses in community members contributions to Wikimedia projects and provided structured training, mentorship, and follow-up support. As a result, we sustained a strong number of active contributors whose efforts have led to the continuous growth of the Nupe Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects, as reflected in the increase in active editors and content contributions shown in ‎https://stats.wikimedia.org/#/nup.wikipedia.org/contributing/new-pages/normal%7Cbar%7C2021-11-28~2025-10-05%7C~total%7Cmonthly ‎ ‎One of the most significant changes observed during this period was the increase in the number of new articles created between September and February, which can be directly attributed to our serial and structured training initiatives designed to activate, retain, and support contributors. ‎ ‎In recognition of the strength of our activities, contributor retention strategies, and community sustainability model, the Nupe Wikimedians community was selected in 2025 as one of the communities accepted into the Language Diversity Hub (LDH) Mentorship Fellowship for 2025-2026. This fellowship is highly competitive, with several communities applying, and selection was based on demonstrated impact, strong activity design, and effective retention policies: ‎ https://diff.wikimedia.org/2025/12/17/announcing-selected-communities-for-the-2025-2026-ldh-mentorship-program/ ‎ of selected communities for the 2025-2026 LDH Mentorship Program. ‎ ‎Despite these achievements, key challenges remain. These include the need for more females, with fewer contributors, and the need to attract more committed Nupe language enthusiasts to ensure long-term sustainability and diversity within the community. ‎ ‎To address these gaps, we are excited to initiate a strategic partnership with the Indigenous Languages Learning Center (ILLEC) - a community-based indigenous language learning initiative focused on teaching and preserving local languages in Minna

‎ILLEC Archives - Minna City of Literature https://minnacityofliterature.com.ng/tag/illec/ ‎ ‎We plan to establish a Nupe Language Wikimedia Camp (NLWC) within ILLEC as a structured and sustainable entry point for new contributors. Our decision to start with only one camp is deliberate. Rather than opening multiple camps that may be difficult to maintain, we are prioritizing effective coordination, continuous mentorship, monitoring, and long-term impact. This focused approach allows us to build a strong, well-managed model that can be evaluated and replicated when capacity permits. ‎ ‎We are intentionally working with an indigenous language learning center because learners at ILLEC are already language enthusiasts whom have demonstrated commitment to language preservation. This existing zeal significantly improves motivation, retention, and contribution quality compared to recruiting individuals without a strong interest in indigenous languages. The camp will transform motivated learners into active digital contributors to Nupe Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects, while intentionally encouraging female participation to address gender diversity gaps. ‎ ‎In addition, recent national developments further strengthen our long-term strategy. In 2025, Nigeria’s National Universities Commission (NUC) approved the teaching of the Nupe language in universities, formally recognizing it as an academic discipline ‎https://leadership.ng/commission-approves-study-of-nupe-tiv-languages-in-universities/ ‎ ‎Building on this milestone, we intend to establish our second Wikimedia camp within a university setting once implementation begins. This will allow us to engage students who are formally studying Nupe and ensure a steady skilled, long-term contributors. ‎ ‎Overall, these combined efforts-community training, strategic partnerships, fellowship recognition, and alignment with national education policy-position the Nupe Wikimedians community to sustainably strengthen participation, promote inclusion, and advance the digital preservation and growth of the Nupe language within the Wikimedia movement.

The students who are already engaged in Nupe indigenous language learning. These sessions will be delivered progressively to ensure skill retention and practical application. ‎ ‎Each session will focus on: ‎ ‎A. Introduction to Wikipedia (https://nup.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tatacin_feregi) ‎ ‎B. Article creation, and use of reliable references. ‎ ‎C. The use of the Wiktionary currently in the incubator stage on the verge of getting its own site (https://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wt/nup/tatacin_feregi) ‎ ‎The step-down approach will allow trained participants to mentor peers, reinforcing learning and expanding impact beyond the initial trainers. ‎ ‎2. Number of editors 100 We aim to retain the train participants with follow ups and prompt check-in in the already established communications platform. This 100 editors will be in form of 20 per training.
Number of organizers 7 We have 5 organizer from the existing Nupe community members whom most are the founders and 2 more from other groups whom serve as volunteers to poster collaborations, guidance and ensure synergy between the languages to ensure smooth cooperation in the future.
