Cultural festival documentation is essential in preserving the cultural and historical values and beliefs of a group of people. Southwest Nigeria is home to a variety of ethnic groups despite all being Yorubas. The states that make up the region each have their own festivals, customs, and historical sites. Each of these states has a number of cultural festivals that are not well represented and properly preserved on Wikipedia. One of the primary changes that this documentation will bring about is the inclusion of underrepresented and often marginalized narratives of the cultural festivals and heritage centres that are not widely recognized and lack comprehensive information on Wikipedia and its sister projects. Wikipedia content will be enhanced by the addition of multimedia components, images, videos, and oral histories pertaining to these festivals. Visual representations will capture the vibrant colors, intricate attire, and dynamic performances associated with these celebrations. The purpose of documenting these aspects of cultural festivals is not limited to improving or creating Wikipedia's content of the unrepresented festivals and heritages but also to introduce educators, cultural practitioners, and historians from the area to add their expertise to Wikipedia projects.
Main Approaches:
1. Fieldwork and Community Engagement: The project will actively engage with representatives from different tribes and ethnic groups, building trust and rapport within the communities. This approach ensures the collection of accurate and comprehensive oral histories directly from the source.
2. Multimedia Documentation: Audio and video recording will be used to capture the oral traditions, storytelling sessions, songs, dances, rituals, and other cultural practices of the festivals.
3. Digital Archiving and Wikimedia Commons: The collected multimedia content will be systematically organized and uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, and will be used on appropriate articles on Wikipedia articles. This approach ensures that the resources are freely available and easily discoverable by a global audience.
4. Collaboration and Partnerships: Collaborating with local cultural organizations will foster partnerships and ensure the project's sustainability. The involvement of various stakeholders will also enrich the documentation process and promote local knowledge sharing.
This project will include a one-on-one interaction with individuals who are key to each of the festivals and cultural heritages so that the historical significance, rituals, and cultural impact of the festivals can be preserved and honored; this will be part of the visual documentation. Which will contribute to a more balanced and equitable representation of global cultures.
The documentation of these festivals will facilitate the sharing of knowledge regarding traditional practices and values, which are often integral to community identity. As information is added about the significance of certain festivals, the meanings of rituals, and the roles of various participants. It will not only educate users about the rich cultural festivals of the Yoruba culture but also foster appreciation and understanding among those from different backgrounds.
This project will enhance the diversity of content, preserving underrepresented narratives, fostering cross-cultural understanding, and promoting community engagement. This initiative not only enriches the global knowledge base but also affirms and celebrates the uniqueness of Nigerian culture, ensuring that future generations can access and appreciate their cultural inheritance. Documenting these elements not only contributes to the preservation of cultural diversity but also enhances educational resources available to a global audience.
The proposed unrepresented cultural festivals are; 1. Oloojo Festival, Ile Ife, Osun State https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olojo_festival
2. Igogo Festival, Owo, Ondo State https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Igogo_festival, and
3. Udiroko Festival, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State [No Wikipedia Article—to be created]. Heritages centres in the selected states of Southwest Nigeria will be
By putting the aforementioned strategies to work, the project will address the issues of cultural knowledge loss, inadequate documentation, and lack of easily accessible resources of the varied cultural festivals and heritages in the selected states in the Southwest region of Nigeria.
