1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

We are proposing a series of events to teach participants how to create and improve Wikipedia and Wikidata articles and items respectively, with an emphasis on underrepresented communities and topics. This is significant because Wikipedia is a widely accessed source of information that impacts people's perception of the world, but existing content is tilted toward topics and communities that are already well-represented. Our activities seek to address the platform's lack of representation and diversity by giving training and assistance to new editors from underrepresented communities, with the goal of improving Wikipedia's and Wikidata's representation and diversity.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

Our key strategy for implementing these changes is to organize a series of training events that will educate participants with the information and skills required to develop and edit Wikipedia and Wikidata articles. These sessions will be targeted to the needs of underrepresented groups and topics, with experienced Wikipedia editors and Wikidata contributors on hand to provide instruction and assistance.

Among our strategies for implementing these improvements are:

  • Recruiting participants from Pentecost University and Ghana Institute of Journalism and providing training, support, and mentoring.
  • Collaboration with LUCG Wikimedia Community and its leaders to increase awareness of the events and assist in facilitation, mentoring and support
  • Providing participants with a friendly and accepting environment in which they can learn and grow at their own speed.*
  • Providing participants with resources and information, such as templates and guidelines, to assist them in effectively creating and improving articles and items.
  • Following up with attendees after the event to offer support and encourage them to keep editing.

We believe these strategies will be effective because they are focused on best practices for community and capacity building in the context of Wikipedia and Wikidata. Furthermore, we believe that by providing training and assistance specific to the interests of underrepresented groups, we will be able to recruit and maintain a diverse group of editors who will be well-equipped to create and improve articles and items on these platforms. Additionally, the follow-up and mentorship will guarantee that the new editors are supported even after the training session, allowing them to contribute to the platform in the future.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

We will develop and implement a number of activities as part of our approaches and strategies, including:

  1. Recruitment and outreach: We will collaborate with LUCG Wikimedia Community and its leaders to identify and recruit suitable training participants. This will entail designing and disseminating promotional materials such as flyers, brochures, and social media postings to create awareness of the events and encourage people to sign up.
  2. Training workshops: We will organize and conduct training workshops to equip participants with the information and skills required to create and improve Wikipedia and Wikidata articles. These courses will be targeted to the interests of underrepresented groups and themes, and will cover topics such as accessing Wikipedia and Wikidata, creating and editing articles and items, sourcing and citing information, and using templates and guidelines.
  1. Mentorship and support: Throughout the training process, we will give participants with mentoring and support. This will entail pairing participants with experienced editors who can provide assistance and answer questions, as well as providing participants with resources and materials, such as templates and guidelines, to assist them in efficiently creating and improving articles and items.
  1. Follow-up and community engagement: Following the event, we will contact participants to offer support and urge them to continue editing. This will entail forming a community of participants who can support and learn from one another, as well as organizing extra training and support sessions to assist participants in further strengthening their abilities.

Yes, we have a team that is needed to implement this proposal. The team is composed of the following members:

Elkay20 - Project Lead and Facilitator: Elkay20 will be responsible for providing clear instructions and directions to the team members, defining team members' responsibilities, roles, and functions, developing and carrying out a project plan and execution, encouraging team members and other project stakeholders to contribute and provide feedback, providing a clear and impartial assessment of project movement and nature in terms of production costs and expenses, determining the best time to advance projects and move on to the next stage, conducting continuous evaluation and adjustment within a specific time frame to ensure that both internal and external factors are not harmed, and keeping track of activities and timelines for the execution of specific activities.

Sunkanmi12 - Trainer/ workshop facilitator and Mentor: Sunkanmi12 will be responsible for curating articles for the events, organizing workshops on Wikipedia and Wikidata, and providing support to participants during and after the event.

Nimot 123 - Communications: Nimot 123 will be responsible for assisting in the development of communication techniques, copywriting, editing, proofreading, and formatting, informing the community members of the project's development, and scheduling meetings.

Awahab515 and Itqaan - Welfare and Logistics: They will be in charge of the welfare of the community members. This includes refreshments, swags. They will also be the first point of contact in the case of UCoC or Friendly Space Policy being violations.

Lamalif14 - Support The team members are experienced Wikipedia editors and Wikidata contributors, and are all volunteers. They are members of LUCG Wikimedia community and have usernames on Wikipedia and Wikidata. They are committed to the success of this project and have the necessary skills and experience to carry out their roles effectively

Our project addresses the content gap explicitly by offering training and support for underrepresented groups and topics on Wikipedia and Wikidata. We are recruiting participants from these communities, providing them with resources and materials, and providing them with mentorship and advice from experienced editors. We hope that by making these materials available, we can increase the number and quality of articles and items about underrepresented communities.

Our intended participants are Pentecost University and Ghana Institute of Journalism students. The purpose is to engage and train these students to write and enhance articles and products on underrepresented communities, such as the Ghanaians and other communities in Ghana.

To engage the participants before and during the activities, we will use a variety of methods:

  • We will work with the universities to identify students who are interested in participating in the training events.
  • We will use social media, such as Facebook and WhatsApp, to create a group where we can share information about the events and answer any questions that the students may have.
  • We will use email and phone to contact the students to remind them of the events and to provide them with any necessary information.
  • During the activities, we will provide a friendly and supportive environment where the students can feel comfortable asking questions and sharing their thoughts.

We will use a variety of strategies to follow up with participants following the activities:

  • We will distribute a survey to participants in order to collect feedback on the events and suggest areas for improvement.
  • We will establish a community in which members can continue to support and learn from one another.
  • We will provide further training and support sessions to participants so that they can continue to improve their skills.
  • We will encourage participants to continue editing Wikipedia and Wikidata by giving resources such as templates and guidelines, as well as mentorship.

We will ensure that we include a "friendly space" policy in our form for participants who intend to participate in our activities. All forms of harassment will not be tolerated.
