Part 1: Project and impact

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

Activity Description To support our mission of equipping African youths with digital and open knowledge skills, WikiActivate Africa organized the AI and Plagiarism Awareness Workshop as part of closing the digital gap in Africa. The objective was to train editors on Wikimedia’s Artificial Intelligence policies, plagiarism rules, and ethical contribution practices across Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikiquote. Program Approach: The program was delivered in two sessions Virtual Workshop - 27 September 2025 (27 participants)

Introductory training on Wikimedia’s stance on AI-generated content, how to maintain content integrity, and detecting AI generated articles and edits.

Physical Workshop - 4 October 2025 (18 participants): Hands-on practical editing, identifying AI-generated content, and contributing to Wikiquote and Wikipedia. To drive participation, we created event flyers, a registration form, and shared announcements on WikiActivate Africa WhatsApp/Telegram communities, Wiki Nigeria UG channels, Wikimedia Africa Telegram groups, and African Digest mailing list. Members also helped spread outreach through their networks.

Contribution Tracking: Due to technical challenges with Outreach Dashboard logging, contributions were tracked using Outreach Dashboard and Manually recorded contribution on tables provided on the Meta event page

Results & Impact: Contribution Growth: 431 contributions across Wikiquotes, Wikipedia and Wiki Common focusing on tech related articles and quotes Digital Skills Development: 47 participants was trained on AI policies, detection of AI-generated content, and how to contribute on Wikpedia, Wikimedia commons and Wikiquote Community Engagement: Increased involvement of new and returning editors Awareness Impact: We strengthened understanding of AI threats, plagiarism risks, and responsibility in creating or editing Wikipedia articles. We also introduce participants on some Wikimedia tools such as Lift Wing, Clue Bot, ORES, AI Translation tool. Participants reported increased confidence in making ethical and verifiable contributions. Wikiquote was especially successful due to fewer editing restrictions for beginners.

Challenges and How We Managed Them : During the implementation of this project, we experienced two main challenges. First, there was a delay in receiving the approved funds, which affected our initial planning and caused a shift in the proposed timeline for the workshops. To ensure the event still took place successfully, we adjusted our dates and maintained active communication with interested participants to keep them engaged and informed about the changes. Secondly, we encountered editing restrictions such as blocking of usernames on Wikipedia that made it difficult for both old and new contributors to make multiple edits. This initially slowed the pace of contribution. To overcome this, we redirected a significant portion of editing efforts to Wikiquote and Wikimedia Commons, where the rules were more flexible for beginners. This adaptation enabled us to maintain high contribution levels and ensure that participants continued learning and applying their skills effectively.

Part 2: Learning

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: We plan to evaluate the impact of Plagiarism in Nigeria and the West African Wikimedia space and understand how we can create more awareness on the issue surrounding it in our rounds of awareness

One of our main learning questions was to understand the level of awareness around Artificial Intelligence and plagiarism. Throughout the project, we discovered that many contributors were not aware of Wikimedia policies on AI and were not fully informed about the risks of plagiarism and the evolving Wikimedia policies designed to protect the integrity of content. This revealed the importance of continued advocacy and structured training on citation, sourcing, and critical evaluation of content before publishing on Wikimedia projects.

Going forward, we need to improve the design of future workshops to include more practical exercises on AI detection. Develop localized awareness materials and collaborate with more educational institutions to introduce good content practices from participants who are more of students

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

While trying to book our physical event venue, we were told that the particular time we wanted has been booked already by someone, so we had to adjust our own time and updated the participants about the time change. This challenge provided valuable learning moments for our team. This experience reinforced the need to make venue arrangements earlier and always prepare a backup plan. By promptly adjusting and informing participants, we were still able to run the event smoothly.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

I plan to write and publish a Diff article to share our experience and learnings with the wider community. Additionally, the event Meta page has already been shared across various community groups for improved visibility.
