Post Wikimedia Hackathon Satellite Events in Tanzania 2023
- Q. Indicate if it is a local, international, or regional proposal and if it involves several countries? (optional)
Local
- Q2. If you have answered regional or international, please write the country names and any other information that is useful for understanding your proposal.
- R. If you would like, please share any websites or social media accounts that your group or organization has.
- 1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.
Low participation and contribution of Tanzanians in the development of Wikimedia projects: Tanzanian individuals and organizations are currently underrepresented in the development and contribution to Wikimedia projects, which limits the diversity and representation of perspectives and knowledge shared on these platforms.
To support the growth of Tanzania’s technical community and to increase diversity, We would like to expose our community members to the Wikimedia projects development field. This is to allow them to be able to contribute to the field. This will give a chance to many more developer experts in and out of our community to be able to contribute to free and open knowledge.
- 2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.
The main approach to achieve these changes is to implement a post-Wikimedia hackathon satellite events in Tanzania. Our strategies to achieve this include:
Community outreach and engagement: We plan to engage with local communities, individuals, and organizations to raise awareness of the importance of Wikimedia projects and the potential impact of local participation and contribution. This will also help to build a technical community of participants that will be able to connect, hack, run technical discussions and explore new ideas. .
Technical training and support: Participants of the hackathon will receive training and support on how to contribute effectively to technical aspects of Wikimedia projects. This will help to increase their understanding of the platforms and provide them with the skills and knowledge needed to make meaningful contributions.
Collaborative project development: The hackathon will provide a space for participants to collaborate and develop projects that contribute to the development of technical aspects of Wikimedia projects. This will encourage local participation and contribution and help to build a sense of community among participants.
Evaluation and reporting: We will evaluate the outcomes of the hackathon and report on its impact and successes. This will help to demonstrate the importance and value of local participation and contribution to the technical aspects of Wikimedia projects and encourage future engagement.
We believe that these strategies will be effective because they address the main challenges of low participation and contribution, limited access to information and knowledge, and lack of understanding and awareness of the importance of Wikimedia projects. By providing technical training and support, creating a collaborative space for project development, and engaging with the local community, we aim to increase the participation and contribution of Tanzanians and organizations to Wikimedia projects.
