In Nigeria, there exists a multitude of games, sports, and cultural recreational activities that are largely unknown and overlooked. This lack of recognition is often attributed to systemic and racial biases, resulting in a significant underrepresentation of professional athletes and sportspeople, thus limiting their visibility. To address this issue, our project is dedicated to decolonizing the knowledge base surrounding the Nigerian sports scene. Despite its vast potential and rapid growth, the Nigerian sports sector remains largely untapped and receives inadequate coverage. Furthermore, the existing content often fails to accurately portray the true diversity and richness of the country's sports landscape. Through this contest, we aim to bridge this gap by highlighting the breadth of sporting activities, amplifying the voices of marginalized athletes, and showcasing the cultural significance embedded within Nigerian sports and recreational pursuits. By shedding light on lesser-known sports and providing a platform for underrepresented athletes, we strive to foster inclusivity and promote a more comprehensive understanding of Nigeria's sporting heritage. The initiative seeks to significantly reduce the content gap and ensure that the Nigerian sports scene receives the recognition and appreciation it rightfully deserves. Highlighting Nigerian athletes and sports that are not yet represented on Wikipedia is crucial for promoting inclusivity and preserving the country's sporting heritage. Some notable athletes and sports that warrant inclusion on Wikipedia include:

1. Traditional Nigerian sports: Nigeria boasts a rich cultural heritage with a variety of traditional sports such as Dambe (traditional boxing), Kokawa (wrestling), and Ayo (a board game). Documenting the history, rules, and notable practitioners of these sports would enrich Wikipedia's coverage of Nigerian sports culture.

2. Underrepresented athletes: Many Nigerian athletes, particularly in lesser-known sports or disciplines, may not have comprehensive Wikipedia articles detailing their achievements and contributions to their respective sports. By researching and documenting their accomplishments, Wikipedia can provide recognition and visibility to these athletes.

3. Emerging sports: Nigeria's sporting landscape is continuously evolving, with athletes excelling in emerging sports such as para-sports, mixed martial arts, and extreme sports. Highlighting the achievements of athletes in these less traditional sports can contribute to a more diverse representation of Nigerian sports on Wikipedia.

4. Female athletes: While Nigerian male athletes often receive more attention, there is a need to spotlight the accomplishments of female athletes across various sports. Documenting their achievements can help address gender disparities in sports coverage on Wikipedia and inspire future generations of female athletes.

5. Regional and indigenous sports: Nigeria is a diverse country with various ethnic groups, each with its own unique sporting traditions. Exploring and documenting regional and indigenous sports from different parts of Nigeria can provide valuable insights into the country's cultural diversity and sporting heritage. By identifying and documenting these underrepresented athletes and sports on Wikipedia, we can contribute to a more comprehensive and inclusive representation of Nigeria's sporting landscape. Here are a few examples of Nigerian female athletes who are not well mentioned on the Wikimedia space

-Chioma Ajunwa-Opara: She made history as Nigeria's first Olympic gold medalist in an individual event at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, winning the women's long jump.
-Blessing Okagbare: A track and field athlete known for her prowess in sprints, she has won numerous medals at international competitions, including the Olympics, World Championships, and Commonwealth Games.
-Perpetua Nkwocha: A former Nigerian footballer who represented the national team, Super Falcons, she is considered one of Africa's greatest female footballers, having won multiple African Women's Championships and represented Nigeria at several FIFA Women's World Cups.
-Oyinlomo Quadre: A rising star in Nigerian tennis, she has achieved success at junior levels and is regarded as one of Africa's most promising young tennis players.
  • Ngozi Okobi: A football midfielder who has represented Nigeria at multiple FIFA Women's World Cups and Olympic Games, she has had a successful career playing for both club and country.

These are just a few examples, and there are many more Nigerian female athletes who have achieved remarkable feats in various sports. Creating Wikipedia articles for these athletes would help celebrate their accomplishments and ensure their contributions are recognized and preserved for posterity. The project aims to implement several key strategies to achieve its objectives:

1. Physical and Virtual Trainings: Participants will receive training sessions to equip them with the skills needed to identify and create high-quality articles. Special emphasis will be placed on improving existing sports and games articles specific to Nigeria, which often lack readability and visual content. New editors will actively contribute to these articles, demonstrating their learning and editing abilities. Close monitoring will ensure the integrity of edits and prevent vandalism. Weekly training sessions will be conducted to review the quality of contributions and provide ongoing support.

2. Edit-a-thon: Experienced editors will be selected to create new articles related to Nigerian sports and games topics. This process will be closely monitored to safeguard against vandalism and maintain article quality. 3. Wiki Loves Women in sport: This initiative will focus on addressing the gender gap on Wikipedia by creating articles about notable Nigerian women in various fields in sports and games. 4. Feedback Mechanism: A Google Form survey will be created to gather feedback from participants regarding their experiences and perceptions of the campaign. This feedback will be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the project and make necessary adjustments for future initiatives. By implementing these strategies, the project aims to significantly enhance the quality and quantity of Nigerian-related content on Wikipedia, particularly in the area of sports, while also fostering community engagement and participation. This approach is tailored to meet the specific needs of the Nigerian community, particularly focusing on establishing a community of young editors. To establish a sport community in Nigeria, a WhatsApp group will be created. This platform will facilitate ongoing interaction, knowledge sharing, and support among participants. Participants will undergo comprehensive training to effectively contribute to various Wikimedia projects covered in the sessions. This training will include creating Wikipedia accounts, understanding core content policies, mastering general editing principles, creating new articles, and making minor edits. These skills will empower participants to enrich content related to individuals, places, organizations, and other topics of interest. To monitor progress and provide assistance, the outreach dashboard will be utilized. This tool enables tracking of contributions and offers one-on-one support to both offline and online editors. By utilizing the outreach dashboard, the project aims to promote engagement and ensure fruitful participation, ultimately contributing to the growth and sustainability of the sport community in Nigeria.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

The project will span over the course of two months, comprising six different sessions aimed at bridging the gap in sports and games coverage in Nigeria: 1. Two-Day In-Person Workshop: The project will kick off with a two-day in-person workshop. This workshop will provide participants with foundational knowledge of Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wiki commons. Three facilitators will guide participants through general and specific notability guidelines, sourcing reliable references, and writing from an objective standpoint to avoid vandalism. 2. Two Series of Online Reinforcement Training: Following the in-person workshop, two series of online reinforcement training sessions will be conducted. These sessions will focus on refining participants' editing skills on platforms like Wikipedia and Wikicommons. An online facilitator will address any lingering questions and help participants improve their editing abilities. 3. Edit-a-thon: Participants will have a month period after the training sessions to put their newfound knowledge into practice through an edit-a-thon. During this time, they will contribute to Wikipedia articles related to sports and games in Nigeria, applying the skills learned during the workshops and online training sessions. 4. Review and Award Presentation: Following the edit-a-thon, a week review session will be conducted to assess participants' contributions. Winners of the edit-a-thon will be identified based on the quality and quantity of their edits. These winners will be rewarded with gift vouchers as recognition for their efforts and contributions to improving content related to sports and games in Nigeria. By implementing these sessions, the project aims to empower participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to contribute effectively to Wikipedia and other Wikimedia platforms, thereby enhancing the coverage of sports and games in Nigeria.
