6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

Adamawa is a region rich in cultural heritage, historical depth, and tourism potential. Yet, much of this richness remains undocumented and largely invisible on global digital platforms like Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata. Years of conflict, neglect, and limited access to digital tools have contributed to the underrepresentation of important places such as the Njuwa Fishing Festival Ground, Gurin Town, the Mubi Ancient Trading Route, and the Koma Hills koma people. Significant cultural landmarks including traditional palaces, historic mosques, colonial era sites, and indigenous craft centers like the Vunoklang Pottery Site and blacksmithing hubs in Ganye and Mayo-Belwa are at risk of being forgotten.

This project aims to address these gaps by documenting and sharing Adamawa untold stories through Wikimedia platforms. Through community engagement, training, and content creation, we hope to preserve this unique heritage, make it accessible to a global audience, and inspire local pride and participation in free knowledge.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

This project is focused on documenting and raising awareness of important cultural and tourism sites across the region. A key activity will be photo walks led by experienced Wikipedia editors and professional photographers who will capture high quality images of notable places. These include the Mubi Ancient Trading Route, historic palaces, old mosques, Adamawa Emirate the town of Mubi, and the Numan River Cultural Corridor. All photos will be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons to improve the region’s visual presence online and help people around the world discover its heritage. ‎ ‎In addition to photography, the project will organize a Wikimedia training session in Jimeta to introduce participants to Wikipedia and its sister platforms. The training will show people how to upload images, edit Wikipedia articles, and add cultural data to Wikidata. The idea is to equip local residents with the skills they need to continue sharing and preserving their culture long after the project ends. ‎ ‎To ensure the information shared is accurate and meaningful, the team will collaborate with local historians, cultural experts, and community leaders. A public project page will be created to provide regular updates and progress reports. There are also plans to partner with cultural institutions, researchers, and Wikimedia user groups to help review the content, ensure quality, and broaden the reach of the project. ‎

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

Learning and metrics

[edit]
17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

This project is about finding the best ways to document places that are often overlooked, while also bringing new people into the Wikimedia movement. It asks important questions like: How do we capture cultural sites in places affected by conflict? How can we involve local people and experts in a meaningful way? What can we do to keep participants active even after training ends? What difficulties come up when working in remote areas, and how can we solve them? It also looks at how powerful good photos and strong articles can be in showing these regions on Wikipedia. By tracking things like participation, uploads, and article improvements, the project will gather useful lessons to shape future cultural documentation efforts on Wikimedia.
