What is the change Rungh wants to bring?
Rungh wants to encourage Wikipedia entries about IBPOC identified artists, arts movements and communities in Canada. There is a documented shortage of these types of entries in Wikipedia, at present. We want to try to fix this inequality of representation on Wikipedia. Rungh's 2026 Art and Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon will focus on the attending audiences to create and edit Wikipedia articles on women, LGBTQ2S+, gender non-binary, people of colour, Black and Indigenous artists, curators and organizations/arts movements. Rungh uses an intersectional lens and encourages Wikipedia entries to be created with this lens for research and writing purposes. Our focus in on IBPOC artists, creators, communities and movements in Canada.
What is Rungh's approach?
Our approach is to reach out to IBPOC, women, LGBTQ2S+, gender non-binary communities to encourage attendance and to explain what we are doing. We will also offer training sessions which are culturally appropriate and which lower barriers to for audience members to attend and participate. We will provide training workshops with Rungh and Wikimedia Canada staff. Rungh will also provide training materials and work with participants to find research materials and topics. Hand-on entry creation, editing, and citation help will be provided to audience members. Rungh has been hosting Wikipedia edit-a-thons since 2019 and has built up experience in how to host events with the target communities/audiences.
Who is Rungh?
Since 1992, Rungh is leading, Canadian platform for racialized artist (IBPOC). We publish Rungh Magazine (published four times a year) as one of Canada's leading IBPOC artist focused magazine. Link: www.rungh.org
In addition, Rungh engages in various initiatives/project to encourage racialized artists and communities to foster creative networks for arts and learning. Rungh's Redux project, which created on online archive, won the British Columbia Museum's 2022 Award of Merit for Innovative Practice. Rungh is also in a writing partnership with the Indigenous Curatorial Collective (ICCA) (Canada's only national Indigenous curatorial network) for the 2025-2026 year, which partnership will commission and publish arts writing by Indigenous writers in the Rungh and ICCA web platforms.
Rungh's history with Art and Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon events?

Rungh also founded Canada's first Rungh Wikipedia Scholars program in 2024. It has grown to include three universities and three arts institutions. In 2024-2025, seven (7) scholars were selected and granted scholarships. As of 2024, Wikimedia Canada has joined with Rungh as a Partner and we have worked with Wikimedia Canada staff to host online education sessions.

Early-mid February - Wikipedia "How To" Workshops and Research for Wikipedia compliant sources
This year we will be partnering with the Surrey Art Gallery, Centre A Gallery and the Black Arts Centre (BLAC) to build on past learnings from Wikipedia Edit-a-thons we have hosted. Rungh will be hosting two (2) workshops with Chelsea Chiovelli (or other staff members) from Wikimedia Canada and Zool Suleman from Rungh. These sessions will introduce new editors to how Wikipedia works and how to use the tools and citation protocols of Wikipedia. The goal is to create comfort and exchange knowledge with artists, researchers, archivists, cultural workers and community members. Our goal is for these workshops to empower the community members and provide skills training to overcome exclusionary barriers.
Late February 2026 - Centre A (or Black Arts Centre) Wikipedia Edit-a-thon - FIRST EVENT
The Centre A (or Black Arts Centre (awaiting confirmation) will be hosting the first in person edit-a-thon. Participants will bring their own devices (laptops, pads, etc.) to research and create entries about IBPOC, LGBTQ2S, gender non-binary, people of colour, Black and Indigenous artists, curators, communities, and organization (feminist and activist movements). With our past experiences, we plan to continue to create space spaces for participants to seek answers, learn and engage in hands-on editing on Wikipedia.
March 8, 2026 - Surrey Art Gallery Wikipedia-edit-a-thon SECOND EVENT
The Surrey Art Gallery will host the second edit-at-thon event for in person participants. At this event, there will be a second presentation on how to research and edit Wikipedia entries. Participants will be encouraged to ask questions and learn skills via hands-on editing. Surrey Arts Gallery staff (who have worked with Rungh in the past on edit-a-thon events) will be available to assist in small table groups.
As a part of this event, participants will be able to tour the exhibitions of the Surrey Art Gallery and engage in conversations about the Surrey Art Gallery's current and past exhibitions which have featured IBPOC artists and creators. The Surrey Art Gallery will also provide access to a selection of its own artist publications which can serve as a research resource for the participants. The participants will also be presented by ongoing research from the 2026 Rungh Wikipedia Scholars from various university and arts groups, (7) presentations are anticipated. These presentations will highlight the work of various IBPOC artists and movements which the scholars are researching for their final projects. The scholars can serve as a resources for those participants who have questions or need one-on-one assistance.
March 28 - Rungh - IBPOC Arts Archives as Research Sources - Reading Group - THIRD EVENT
Rungh will host the third event in this series. It will be an online event that will focus on IBPOC archives in Canada which can serve as a citable sources for Wikipedia entries. Rungh will work with researchers/archivists from Wikimedia Canada, Simon Fraser University Special Collections and the The ArQuives (Canada's only LGBTQ2S+ archive with a national scope) (to be confirmed) to hold a workshop on the scope of their collections and how they can used in Wikipedia research and edits. Reading sources will be provided in advance and participants will be invited to share their thoughts on the readings and create on line reflections about Wikipedia which we be posted on the Rungh web platform. This event will provide access for those who cannot attend in person and who wish to learn more about Wikipedia. The event, along with the whole series, will be publicized on Rungh's web platform and those of its partners (Surrey Art Gallery, BLAC Arts Centre, Centre A, Simon Fraser University, ArQuives, etc.).

The 2026 Art & Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon will engage and build upon communities that we have been working with since 2019. Rungh will be partnering with the Surrey Art Gallery, the Centre A Gallery, and the BLAC Arts Centre to engage with their memberships/mailing lists/social media to build awareness of these series of events.
The Surrey Art Gallery is Surrey's municipal arts space and Surrey is one of the most multiculturally diverse cities in Canada. The BLAC Arts Centre is also located in Surrey and has programming and events which highlight Black identified artists and communities. Centre A is locate in Vancouver's Historic Chinatown district. These set of partners will encourage inter-generational and cross-cultural conversations. Our goal is to have a wide range of voices, experiences and groupings at the proposed events.
Rungh will be sending emails, posting on social media accounts and work with the partners to reach out to specific communities noted in this application. Rungh will follow up with a participants survey to seek feedback and input to improve the series for future cycles. In addition, surveys and comment sheets will be provided to participants
