SALIN ( Sharing and Archiving Living and Indigenous Knowledge) Davao seeks to strengthen the continuity of community knowledge by enabling local communities to document, preserve and openly share knowledge that is usually underrepresented or at risk of being lost.
Across Mindanao region, valuable knowledge such as indigenous knowledge systems from tribal groups or what we call the First Peoples,oral traditions, language, local histories, food heritage, ecological practices and community memories remain largely undocumented or if portions of it are documented, are stored in fragmented channels. Oftentimes they are inaccessible in open knowledge platforms. As communities change, languages evolve, elders pass away, significant knowledge may disappear before it can be responsibly documented and shared.
Although there are local communities, cultural institutions and researchers, having a siloed storage or preservation strategies may not work well and transform this knowledge into ethically documented, openly licensed, and most importantly, structured digital resources that can benefit local and global audiences. Most documentation efforts done here in Mindanao are project-based, fragmented, disconnected from sustainable community participation.
This is what SALIN Davao by Wikiclub Davao addresses, by introducing a community-based knowledge systems approach. Instead of just focusing only on creating Wikimedia content, we begin by identifying what aspect of indigenous knowledge are at risk of loss if not recorded, engage with knowledge keepers through ethical and inclusive documentation, building the skils of local volunteers and institutional partners, organizing this knowledge into structured, reusable resources for Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata.
Wikiclub Davao will focus on selected knowledge that reflects Davao City’s cultural diversity, including the knowledge of the 11 Ethnolinguistic tribes, their language, governance, traditional food heritage, ecological knowledge, traditional crafts and oral histories. This project has gained heads up by partner cultural institutions, academic partners and elders to ensure that this project is rspectful and guided by community participation and scaled for sustainability through building local capacity and promoting ethical local knowledge practices in accordance with Wikimedia’s vision of ensuring that the summof knowledge reflects the diversity of the community that creates and sustains it,

When we launched Wikiclub Davao in March, SKAP made it a point to connect and build collaboration with cultural organizations and the City Government of Davao. From those connections along with university officials, we were able to establish understanding and cooperation with them. This project, subject to the approval of WMF and the committee is the piece that will complete the puzzle. For participants, we discussed with the partners that they will send participants and co-promote the project to various stakeholders since they know their constituents better. For university participants, a series of meetings have been held by SKAP, Wikiclub Davao and Wikiclub Zamboanga for participation and membership. For SALIN Davao, Wikiclub Davao will integrate SALIN into its regular activities moving forward, while documented methodology serves as scalable model for geographical expansion as well as pioneer participants can teach others within their campus and participate again in a different project.

We are mostly in discussion on email threads, on messaging platforms, on videocalls since we are not yet familiar with on-wiki community discussions. SKAP taught us how to create events on Meta page but we still need to discuss among the team who will be our designated communication officer to lead the discussions on-wiki.

Since this is a cultural and living heritage documentation for Indigenous Knowledge Sytem, we wanted to link each information on the three main cultural knowledge repositories within the Wikimedia System - Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata to interlink all these information and see how it will impact open knowledge beneficiaries as well as the generations to come.
