Part 1: Project and impact
[edit]1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)
To achieve our proposed plan for the SheSaid 2024: African Women Academics campaign, we implemented several activities aimed at promoting participation and engaging our target audience.
Implemented Activities:
Awareness Campaign: We maintained an active awareness campaign throughout the duration of the project. This included posting regularly on social media before and after the campaign to engage participants and reach our target audience. Additionally, we distributed flyers across various Wikimedia WhatsApp platforms and organized a one-day awareness rally at the University of Ilorin campuses to further promote the campaign and engage the community.
Community Collaboration: We partnered with the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE), Nigeria Chapter, to mobilize women educators, who were our primary focus of contribution for the SheSaid campaign. FAWE played a key role in helping gather data for the edit-a-thon contest and supported us during our virtual webinar and onboarding sessions, encouraging participants to contribute to the advancement of education and African women.
Physical Training and Edit-a-thon: We organized a two-day physical training and edit-a-thon event. On the first day, participants were introduced to the basics of editing Wikiquote and various Wikimedia sister projects. We also engaged them in an educational game that highlighted their contributions to the SheSaid campaign. We focused on creating and improving contents on African women Academics on the second day of the physical training giving participants hands-on experience in contributing to Wikiquote.
Virtual Webinar and Online Session: We hosted a general online session featuring an experienced Wikiquote editor and trainer, Tochi Precious, who guided participants on how to contribute to the African women academics campaign, focusing on sourcing quotes online and engaging with the community.
Contest: To wrap up the campaign, we organized a two-week writing contest to close the content gap on African women academics on Wikiquote, focusing on African countries. The contest rewarded five winners who contributed high-quality content rather than quantity.
Results Achieved:
We successfully reached our target of 40 participants, including both new and returning contributors. To track our progress, we utilized the Wikimedia registration tool, which helped us monitor participant engagement. In addition to meeting our goals for editor retention, we were able to create and improve articles as planned.
Effective Approaches:
The most effective approaches in supporting our results were the combination of active social media engagement, strategic community collaboration with FAWE, and the hands-on experience of both the physical and virtual training sessions. These activities, paired with the writing contest, created a supportive environment that encouraged participation and ensured both the quality and quantity of content contributed to Wikiquote.

Part 2: Learning
[edit]4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)
You can recall these learning questions below: In this project, we aim to achieve several key learning outcomes that will contribute to both the immediate success and long-term sustainability of the project:
1)Refining Wikiquote Editing Skills: Through hands-on participation, we aim to enhance our editing skills by focusing on best practices for article creation, content improvement, accurate citation, and adherence to sourcing standards. These skills will elevate the quality of our contributions and improve our expertise as Wikiquote editors and trainers.
2)Building Community Engagement and Collaboration: We seek to learn effective strategies for engaging diverse communities, onboarding new editors, and collaborating with partners such as the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE). Building strong, lasting relationships with these communities is crucial for the project’s success and growth.
3)Developing Project Management and Leadership: As project leaders, we aim to strengthen our skills in managing the project lifecycle, including planning, time management, resource allocation, and coordinating activities. This will enhance our leadership and organizational abilities, ensuring smooth execution for future projects.
4)Improving Editor Retention: We aim to learn how to design and implement strategies for retaining editors by providing mentorship, ongoing support, and meaningful engagement opportunities. This will help foster a welcoming community and encourage long-term participation in SheSaid events, Wikiquote, and other Wikimedia projects.
5)Refining Impact Assessment and Evaluation: Finally, we seek to improve our ability to measure and evaluate the project’s impact by analyzing outreach effectiveness, participant engagement, and satisfaction. This data-driven approach will enable continuous improvement and help us maximize the overall impact of our work.
Throughout the implementation of the project, I learned valuable insights from each of the learning questions we set out to explore.
Refining Wikiquote Editing Skills: I gained a deeper understanding of the importance of adhering to editing policies on wikiquote. The hands-on experience showed how even small adjustments like ensuring quotes are properly referenced and adding categories to each page greatly contribute to the overall quality of the content.
Building Community Engagement and Collaboration: I learned the significance of establishing open communication within the community. By working with partners like FAWE, I understood how important it is to create a welcoming environment for diverse groups of editors. Strategies such as hosting introductory sessions, one-one one training sessions and providing accessible training materials were key in helping new editors feel supported. I hope to continue building on these engagement techniques to foster an inclusive and collaborative community in future projects.
Developing Project Management and Leadership: The experience reinforced my ability to manage multiple tasks while maintaining focus on the project’s long-term goals. Through regular planning and time management, I realized the importance of resource allocation and adapting to unforeseen challenges. This experience sharpened my leadership skills, and I am excited to apply these lessons in future projects, ensuring smoother execution and more efficient outcomes.
Improving Editor Retention: I learned that retention isn’t just about keeping editors involved. It’s about nurturing relationships and creating a sense of belonging. Offering mentorship and ongoing support helped ensure editors felt valued and empowered. I plan to incorporate these practices into future projects, creating sustainable communities where contributors are motivated to stay engaged long-term.
Refining Impact Assessment and Evaluation: By analyzing data on outreach effectiveness and participant engagement, I learned how to assess whether our strategies were successful and where improvements were needed. This approach has taught me the value of data in shaping future strategies and ensuring continuous growth. In future initiatives, I will be more deliberate in using metrics to guide decision-making and improve impact.
In the future, I plan to use these learnings to enhance the overall quality and sustainability of my projects. Whether it’s refining editing skills, building stronger communities, or improving project management, these insights will guide my approach and contribute to long-term success.
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
Unexpected Situations:
Positive Situation: Despite the short notice for our awareness and outreach campaign, we were still able to gather our target participants and make progress in closing the content gap we had identified during our research. This was a positive outcome, showing that even with limited time, effective outreach can still lead to good results.
Support and Collaboration: We received a lot of support from the global SheSaid campaign team in helping us implement the campaign in Nigeria. Additionally, we were able to work with local communities, which helped improve the content gap on English Wikiquote. Some of these communities also translated the content into their local languages, extending the impact of the campaign.
Negative Situation:
Dashboard Downtime: During the edit-a-thon, participants were actively contributing to closing the content gap on African women academics, but the dashboard did not show their progress. This issue discouraged some contributors, as they couldn't see the results of their work in real-time, which affected their motivation.
Registration Tool: For a few days, the registration tool was not accessible to new users and existing editors. Because of this, we were unable to register some participants, which slowed down our ability to track and involve all interested contributors.
Lesson Learned: From these experiences, we learned the importance of using other project management tools, even if they are not integrated with Meta, to track contributions and securely store data. This will help us maintain proper records and upload them to the dashboard once it’s working again.
6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)
To share the project learnings and results with other community members, I plan to create detailed reports outlining the project methodologies, findings, and recommendations. These reports will serve as comprehensive resources for community members seeking insights into effective strategies for promoting gender diversity within the Wikimedia community.
Additionally, I will actively engage with community members through online platforms such as Wikimedia mailing lists, forums, and social media channels. By sharing project updates, resources, and engaging in discussions, I aim to foster dialogue and collaboration among community members towards advancing gender diversity initiatives within Wikimedia.
