Across the world, women leaders and entrepreneurs are driving innovations, building sustainable businesses, and leading grassroots development. Their contributions have been vital to global progress, advancing Sustainable Development Goals such as Gender Equality (SDG 5), Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), and Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10). Through the words of these women, countless young women have been inspired to pursue their leadership paths.
Yet, despite their growing influence, many of these voices remain undocumented on Wikiquote. This project seeks to address two core challenges:
1. Lack of Quotes from Women Leaders and Entrepreneurs: Our preliminary research shows that over 200 of these women leaders and entrepreneurs have well-documented Wikipedia biographies but do not have corresponding articles on Wikiquote as seen here[1]. This points to a clear gender content imbalance and risks losing valuable quotes that could inform, inspire, and empower others.
2. Low Retention of Women Editors on Wikiquote and in SheSaid Campaigns: While SheSaid campaigns have successfully brought in new women participants into the Wikimedia movement, low long-term engagement of new women editors remains a major challenge. Many new women contributors participate during a single event or edit-a-thon but do not remain active afterward. This limited retention reduces the number of active female editors and hampers efforts to create a more inclusive contributor base.
To address the identified challenges, the following approaches will be adopted:
1. Mentorship and Peer Learning: A structured mentorship model will be implemented, in which experienced Wikiquote trainers(mentors) will be paired with new editors. This approach is informed by successful practices in other Wikimedia events, where mentorship has been shown to strengthen editor retention and build contributor confidence
2. Content Creation: This approach will involve organizing physical, and virtual training sessions and edit-a-thons focused on contributing quotes from these notable women to Wikiquote. These sessions will guide participants through the process of sourcing, citing, improving, and creating new pages in line with Wikiquote standards.
Through this approach, we aim to increase the representation of women leaders and entrepreneurs on Wikiquote and help transition one-time women participants into active Wikiquote and SheSaid contributors equipping them with mentorship, practical skills, and a supportive community.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
1. Creating Awareness: An awareness campaign will be launched across Facebook, X, LinkedIn, and online community groups of our intended audience. A WhatsApp group will be created for interested participants to facilitate ongoing communication, resource sharing, and engagement before, during, and after the events.
2. Partnership with SheLeads Africa: We will partner with the Lagos chapter of SheLeads Africa to recruit 20 women participants as new editors for both the physical and online training sessions. This partnership will leverage SheLeads Africa’s strong networks of women from underrepresented communities who are passionate about entrepreneurship, leadership, and knowledge sharing.
3. Wikiquote Training – Day 1: The first day of training will begin with an interactive introduction and a presentation on the SheSaid Campaign and the significance of this project. The introductory session will be followed up with two core training components which are:
- Understanding Wikiquote Editing Policies and Guidelines: Participants will learn Wikiquote’s quotability standards, general editing principles, and citation best practices.
- Improving and Cleaning Up Existing Wikiquote Pages: A hands-on session will teach participants how to categorize pages, fix broken links, and improve existing pages by adding properly sourced quotes.
After the training, participants will engage in an edit-a-thon, applying their new skills under the guidance of experienced trainers to ensure a practical learning experience.
4. Wikiquote Training – Day 2: The second day will focus on creating new Wikiquote pages for these women from scratch. Training will consist of:
- Proper use of Wikiquote templates for individual quotes.
- Step-by-step guidance on creating new, well-sourced, and policy-compliant pages.
Participants will then participate in an edit-a-thon. This hands-on session will be complemented by open networking activities and interactive discussions to encourage a sense of community between participants.
5. Two Virtual Reinforcement Training: To sustain contributions after the physical events, two virtual reinforcement training will be organized. These online sessions will provide additional support and refresher modules training based on participant feedback. Recordings of the virtual sessions will be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, enabling participants to re-watch for better understanding.
6. Mentorship and Peer Learning: To support ongoing growth and retention, new participants will be grouped into mentorship clusters led by experienced trainers. Mentors will:
- Provide guidance on improving Wikiquote editing skills.
- Offer personalized feedback during and after the events.
- Host virtual micro-sessions addressing specific challenges (e.g., sourcing quotes, formatting).
7. Contest: An online contest will be organized to encourage participants and editors to bridge the content gaps of women leaders and entrepreneurs on Wikiquote. Gift vouchers will be awarded to the top three contributors, the best new editor, and an outstanding female editor. Participants will be judged based on the number of quality edits, sources added, and creation of new pages.
- 8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

- 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)
Our target participants are women from underrepresented communities, recruited through our partnership with SheLeads Africa and existing Wikimedia editors. These participants will be engaged through a structured process comprising the following phases:
1. Outreach and Mobilization: Awareness campaigns will be launched across Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), LinkedIn, and community WhatsApp groups of our target audience.
2. Pre-Event Onboarding: All interested participants will be added to a WhatsApp group for pre-event communication, resource sharing, and orientation. They will be provided with introductory materials to best prepare them for the physical sessions.
3. During the Events: We will conduct two days of hands-on training and edit-a-thons focused on Wikiquote editing. Practical guidance will be provided to ensure participants understand and apply the editing skills effectively. The WhatsApp group will remain active during and after the event to serve as a real-time support channel for questions, challenges, and feedback.
4. Post-Event Engagement
- Virtual Reinforcement Training and Meet-Ups: A series of post-event virtual sessions will be held to reinforce learning, address specific editing challenges, and encourage continued engagement.
- Mentorship Model: Participants will be grouped into mentorship clusters, with five participants assigned to one mentor each for at least three months following the physical training event. Mentors will host monthly micro-sessions, support editing challenges, monitor contributions, and provide continuous encouragement to help new participants become long-term contributors.
- Community Integration: Participants will join the global SheSaid and Wiki Loves Women Telegram groups. They will also be encouraged to attend local Wikimedia meetups to further integrate into the broader community.
- Feedback and Monitoring: Monthly participant impact surveys will begin after the physical training and continue for two months to assess progress, track editing activity, and identify areas where additional support may be needed.
