The Wikimedians of Lagos User Group aims to bring about a change in the representation of notable women, most especially notable women born in Lagos, on both English Wikiquote and Nigerian Pidgin Wikiquote (Incubator). There are many notable women from Lagos e.g., Temitayo Ogunbiyi, Temilayo Abodunrin, Veronica Openibo, who are not yet represented on either projects.
This proposal addresses the underrepresentation of these women by creating and improving their pages in English Wikiquote and initiating content creation for them in Nigerian Pidgin Wikiquote (Wq/pcm) in the Wikimedia Incubator. This aligns with our broader goal of promoting Lagos and its people while supporting multilingual inclusiveness in Wikimedia projects.
This campaign directly supports the long-term goal of making [Wq/pcm] a fully-fledged subdomain (pcm.wikiquote.org) by increasing quality content, building an active editor base, and demonstrating sustained community activity in Nigerian Pidgin.
We will encourage existing and new members to celebrate and recognize women, most especially Lagos-born women, by enhancing their visibility and representation in both English and Nigerian Pidgin languages. Our main approaches are:
1. Research: We will conduct thorough research to identify notable women, most especially Lagos-born women, on English Wikipedia to establish their notability and compile a comprehensive list of these women and their quotes.
2. Content Creation: We will create new pages on English Wikiquote for each of identified notable women, including their biographical information in the introduction section in enwikiquote and adding relevant quotes. We will improve their articles on English Wikiquote and initiate their entries on Nigerian Pidgin Wikiquote (Incubator).
3. Capacity Building: We will train participants on contributing in both English and Nigerian Pidgin Wikiquote environments. We will review and improve existing pages on English Wikiquote related to notable women born in Lagos by adding new well sourced quotes or expanding on existing ones.
4. Multilingual Contribution: We will introduce participants to contributing in Nigerian Pidgin using Standard Naijá Orthography (SNO) and simple, accessible language for quote translation.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
- Research Phase:
- We will conduct extensive research to identify notable women born in Lagos on the English Wikipedia across various fields such as politics, arts, sports, science, and literature.
- We will add a link to these notable women born in Lagos to the event landing page and encourage participants to pick from this list thus eliminating notability issues which may arise if participants are left to just create any article about women born in Lagos.
- We will evaluate their quote availability and notability on both English Wikipedia and other sources.
- Content Creation and Improvement Phase:
We will train participants over 5 training sessions and 2 edit-a-thons, ensuring quality contributions to both English Wikiquote and Nigerian Pidgin Wikiquote (Incubator).
- Create new pages: We will organize editathon to create new pages on English Wikiquote and Nigerian Pidgin Wikiquote for each notable woman born in Lagos already added to the list of articles to be created, providing accurate and comprehensive biographical information in the introductory section.
- Improve existing articles: We will improve existing articles by adding quotes and reliable sources to wikiquote pages of women born in Lagos during the editathon.
- Add quotes: We will add relevant quotes to the newly created pages, attributing them properly to the respective women and adding credible source.
- Review existing pages: Existing pages related to notable women born in Lagos will be reviewed, with quotes expanded or improved with reliable sources to enhance their content and accuracy.
