6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

Our goal is to bridge the gender gap on Wikipedia by increasing the visibility and representation of women, particularly African women, through improved content and active participation in the Wikimedia ecosystem. This initiative aligns with the objectives of the Wiki Loves Women campaign, which advocates for gender equity in digital spaces by celebrating and amplifying the contributions and heritage of women.

One of the main challenges we address is the underrepresentation of women on Wikipedia, both in terms of content and contributors. Historical and systemic biases have resulted in a lack of coverage of notable women and their achievements, especially in African contexts. Additionally, women—particularly those with disabilities and from marginalized groups—face barriers in accessing, contributing to, and engaging with digital knowledge platforms.

Our approach to solving these issues includes:

Promoting writing, reading, and editing about women’s thereby enriching Wikiquote with well-sourced, high-quality articles about women in Rwanda and beyond.

Engaging women from all backgrounds, with a specific focus on women with disabilities, to ensure inclusive participation.

Mobilizing new female contributors and building a strong foundation for long-term engagement through targeted outreach and training.

Involving WikiClubs in schools across Rwanda to create early awareness and skills in digital knowledge creation while empowering young girls to become content creators and advocates for gender equality.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

This project aims to bridge the gender content gap on Wikipedia and empower women in Rwanda as contributors to open knowledge. Key outcomes include:

  • Creating over 800 quotes and 350 Pictures by or about notable women for Wikiquote, highlighting their voices and perspectives.
  • Training 40 new editors in Rwanda, focusing on women and those with disabilities, equipping them to create high-quality content.
  • Raising awareness among women about their rights to participate in digital knowledge creation, promoting long-term cultural change.
  • Revising existing content to ensure accurate and inclusive representation of African women’s heritage and achievements.
  • Strengthening local WikiClubs, particularly in schools, to foster sustainable knowledge-sharing communities and encourage young women to engage in writing and preserving their cultural history.

Ultimately, the initiative will promote a more inclusive knowledge ecosystem that reflects the diversity of women's experiences.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

Currently, there is no formal team, but once funding is secured, I plan to engage a dedicated group of volunteers experienced in Wikimedia projects, who are passionate about gender equity and digital knowledge.

This network will focus on outreach, training, content creation, and community engagement, forming a working group to achieve the campaign's goals and ensure sustainability.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)
    • Target Participants:**
  • Young women
  • Women with disabilities

Participants will be sourced from the Wikimedia User Group Rwanda and various WikiClubs, including those in schools and community centers.

    • Before the Activities:**
  • Conduct outreach campaigns through social media and local networks to inform potential participants.
  • Collaborate with Wikimedia volunteers and WikiClub coordinators to identify interested women, especially those new to editing.
  • Provide preliminary onboarding sessions to introduce participants to Wikimedia platforms and the Wiki Loves Women campaign.

No

10.1. Please provide a link to your Youth Safety Policy. (required) If the proposal indicates direct contact with children or youth, you are required to outline compliance with international and local laws for working with children and youth, and provide a youth safety policy aligned with these laws. Please describe steps taken and provide links to any on-wiki community discussion(s) about the proposal. (required) You need to inform the community and/or group, discuss the project with them, and involve them in planning this proposal. You also need to align the activities with other projects happening in the planned area of implementation to ensure collaboration within the community.

I have already started discussions with Robert Ruganda, the lead of WikiClubs in Rwanda, about potential collaboration. Once we receive the funding, we will formalize this partnership and work closely together during the implementation phase. Our focus will be on engaging WikiClubs, particularly those with active participation from young women, to ensure inclusive involvement and lasting impact. This collaboration will help mobilize female participants, support training efforts, and strengthen community-driven contributions to Wikimedia projects.

Learning and metrics

[edit]
17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

Through this project, I aim to learn how to effectively engage and empower women—particularly young women and women with disabilities—to contribute to Wikimedia projects. I want to understand what motivates them to participate, what challenges they face, and how we can best support them in becoming active editors and content creators.

The main things I would like to learn from this initiative include:

1. **Effective Methods**: What strategies are most successful in attracting and retaining women editors in Rwanda, especially those who are new to the Wikimedia movement?

2. **Impact of Activities**: How does participation in WikiClubs and edit-a-thon events influence the confidence, skills, and long-term engagement of women editors?

3. **Challenges Faced**: What specific challenges do women, particularly those with disabilities, encounter when editing on Wikimedia platforms, and how can we address these issues to create a more inclusive environment?

4. **Community Collaboration**: How can collaboration with local WikiClubs enhance community participation and ensure the sustainability of gender-focused initiatives?

The data collected through participation records, feedback surveys, and follow-up engagement will help answer these questions. This learning will be valuable not only for improving future activities but also for informing broader efforts to make Wikimedia spaces more inclusive and representative.

18. What are your Wikimedia project targets in numbers (metrics)? (required)
Number of participants, editors, and organizers
Other Metrics Target Optional description
Number of participants 50 In this project, my aim is to engage at least 90% women participants, with a strong emphasis on inclusivity and empowerment. I want to create a safe and supportive environment where women—particularly young women and women with disabilities—can actively contribute to Wikimedia projects.

To further encourage participation and recognize exceptional contributions, I plan to introduce a special award for the best woman contributor. This award will celebrate dedication, quality contributions, and active involvement throughout the project, while also motivating others to remain engaged and committed.

Number of editors 40 40 volunteers
Number of organizers 5 The project will be coordinated by 5 organizers who will oversee the planning, implementation, and community engagement. To ensure transparency and fairness in recognizing outstanding contributors, a panel of three jury members will be appointed to evaluate contributions from participants.

. The jury will assess contributions based on quality, consistency, and impact, with the aim of encouraging ongoing participation and recognizing exceptional dedication.
