Part 1: Project and impact

[edit]

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

The project followed the initial planned activities when writing the application which helped us maximize the campaign timeline to achieve the goals of the global campaign with measurable significance and contribution.

We created awareness through diverse mediums utilizing various social media channels like WhatsApp, Instagram, and LinkedIn. We reached a broader audience by reaching out to existing Wikimedia communities and non-Wikimedia communities. A dedicated WhatsApp group allowed us to gather participants together and offer mentorship and assistance through the project implementation.

We kickstarted the campaign with a virtual session to onboard participants and sensitize our audience to the campaign's goals. We had a two-day physical event where we had training on the first day to teach participants basic editing skills, how to search for and retrieve information and thereby improve or create articles on Wikiquote. The second day helped participants gain practical experience in the previous teachings and the opportunity to contribute to the campaign’s edit-a-thon.

The Edit-a-thon session spanned four weeks and promoted effective participation, mentorship, and access to participants' understanding and contribution to the campaign. The event concluded with documentation, tracking of participants’ contributions, and awarding of prizes to top 3 contributors, top newest editor, and the outstanding female contributor.

Part 2: Learning

[edit]

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: By organizing this event, we aim to gain knowledge and achieve specific learning outcomes:

1. Project management: As project lead and facilitator for the project, we aim to develop our project management skill. We will achieve this outcome by overseeing all areas of the project, coordinate all activities, manage resources, and guide volunteers to achieve project goals effectively and efficiently.

2. Community Building: We aim to learn how communities grow and identify the key areas and interests that encourages volunteers to commit more to a community. We aim to implement strategies that will help retain editors beyond the project by providing support, mentorship and share future Wikimedia opportunities to encourage continued participation.

3. Enhanced editing skills: Through hands-on participation in editing Wikiquote, we aim to enhance our skills in article creation, improvement, citation, and sourcing standards. This will not only benefit our contributions to this project but also improve our overall proficiency in editing Wikimedia projects.

4. Editor’s Challenges: Through this project, we aim to identify challenges contributors face when making contributions to projects focused on gender equity. The insights gained will help us address issues effectively for this project and future Wikimedia projects we lead as a team.

5. Feedback and Improvement: We aim to gather participant feedback to improve our project plans and initiatives, making our efforts more impactful and encourage continuous participation in future Wikmedia Projects.

The project provided me with invaluable experience as a facilitator. I gained firsthand insights into organizing and managing an inclusive campaign, from recruiting and engaging participants to creating an environment that is supportive and inclusive for contributors. Coordinating the project alongside the co-facilitators, guiding volunteers, and fostering meaningful participation amongst other communities helped me understand the challenges and opportunities in ensuring diverse representation.

Through implementing the campaign, I enhanced my problem-solving and adaptability skills by successfully working alongside participants to engage toward the campaign goal, content curation, and volunteer coordination.

Leading and facilitating the campaign has helped me gain hands-on experience in planning, coordination, and resource management. Overseeing the major aspects of the project has helped me refine my ability to execute structured and impactful initiatives.

I gained insights into providing training to newcomers interested in Wikiquote editing. This included developing easily accessible onboarding processes and training materials to facilitate their integration into the platform effectively. By ensuring that training is tailored to the specific needs and interests of participants, we increased their confidence and skills to contribute to Wikimedia projects.

The project implementation helped me understand better ways to motivate volunteers to stay engaged in the campaign. The insights learned will be a crucial factor in strengthening future communities and sustaining engagement beyond individual projects.

Creating an inclusive community became a top priority, and I learned how to encourage participation from underrepresented groups and interested communities. This meant identifying the challenges they face and finding ways to make them feel supported, and valued in the community.

Gathering participant feedback provided valuable insights into areas that worked well and aspects that needed improvement. Understanding participant experiences helped refine my approach to project planning, making future initiatives more structured, engaging, and impactful.

In future projects, I will apply my enhanced project management skills to organize more structured and efficient Wikimedia campaigns, ensuring better planning, coordination, and goal achievement. I will implement effective volunteer retention strategies by fostering constant guidance in Wikimedia projects, creating engagement incentives, and ensuring continuous learning opportunities within the Wikimedia community.

These learnings will not only strengthen my contributions to the Wikimedia movement but also enhance my ability to lead and support impactful knowledge-sharing projects in the future.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

During the project implementation, one of the most rewarding aspects of the project was the enthusiasm and active participation of editors. Many of them not only contributed to the campaign but also showed a strong willingness to commit to future Wikimedia projects. Seeing their commitment reinforced the importance of creating a welcoming and supportive learning environment. From this experience, I learned that mentorship, hands-on training, and community support play a crucial role in retaining new contributors and ensuring long-term engagement in Wikimedia projects.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

To share my learnings from the project, I will utilize online spaces like Wikimedia forums, social media and in-person. I also am an executive in my local community which affords me the opportunity to reach a vast number of people with knowledge. By sharing updates, resources, and joining discussions, I hope to encourage more people to work together on gender diversity initiatives.
