6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

The #SheSaid campaign is an annual campaign that aims to celebrate and recognize women by focusing on enhancing the representation and visibility on Wikiquote. This project is focused on amplifying the voices of African women who have contributed to the impact of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Field.

The contributions of women in the STEM field have seen transformational change in innovations, developing solutions that address challenges in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, clean energy, and digital technology. The involvement of women has long contributed to the growth of the economy, which has, in turn, expanded the talent pool and encouraged more diverse, inclusive, and effective teams, driving change in various societies.

The impact of African women in STEM can be seen through their contributions to driving innovation, challenging gender stereotypes, boosting economic growth, and creating community impact.

This project seeks to amplify the voices of African women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) thereby profiling their achievements and contritbutions to the society and ensuring their stories and impact are recognized and celebrated. Additionally, we aim to bridge language gap and promote local language by collaborating with the Igbo community to translate both new and existing STEM-related articles. This collaboration will help bring valuable information to a wider reach and contribute to the preservation and growth of the Igbo language in the scientific community.

Our approach to achieving this project entails: Create Awareness: To drive participation, we will leverage various social media platforms, including Instagram, WhatsApp, and X (formerly Twitter), to share content and updates. We will organize public talks and outreach sessions to engage prospective participants and raise awareness about the project’s goal and the value of contributing to the Wikimedia movement.

Content Creation: Through the campaign period, we will organize a series of both physical and virtual engagement sessions aimed at educating and guiding participants on how to contribute meaningfully to the project’s goal. These sessions will focus on content creation and translation, empowering participants to actively bridge knowledge gaps.

Partnership: We are partnering with STEM Lab Africa, a STEM-focused community in Nigeria, to strengthen outreach and participation. This participation will provide valuable support in engaging young innovators, women, and learners, aligning with our goal to empower more youth. We are also partnering with AIESEC in Nigeria, a community focused on developing young people's leadership potential through global internships and volunteer opportunities, which will be introduced to the campaign as a strategic partner to foster collaboration and broaden participation and onboard new members from their vibrant network.

Community Collaboration: To increase our reach and impact, we will collaborate with the Igbo Wikimedia community to support the translation of content regarding STEM into the Igbo language. This partnership will help bridge the language gap, promote local knowledge, and ensure inclusivity during the project timeline.

Community engagement: Through the virtual and physical sessions, we aim to engage diverse individuals, with a focus on women, members of STEM communities, and contributors to Wikimedia projects. This approach will help foster broader participation during the campaign.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

Create Awareness: We plan to raise awareness through various media, both online and offline channels, like social media and public talks. On social media, we plan to utilize digital materials like flyers, short videos, and informative posts to capture attention, increase, and encourage participation. For public talks and outreach sessions, we will employ creative and interactive methods to engage prospective participants via one-on-one conversations, informal group discussions.

Virtual session: The virtual session will be split into two sessions. The first session will serve as an introduction for the participants and contributors. It will feature an enlightening presentation by a representative from STEM Lab Africa to highlight the importance of women in STEM and their roles. The second session will come up at the end of the campaign to evaluate the overall impact of the campaign and gather feedback from participants which will help identify successes and areas for improvement in future campaigns.

Physical training: For the English and Igbo communities, we will conduct two physical training sessions, each spread across two days. The first day will feature a hands-on training session where participants will learn how to create and improve articles on Wikiquote. The second day will be an edit-a-thon session where participants will gain practical experience to implement the knowledge gained from the initial training session.

Contest: The campaign will conclude with an online contest open to all participants. Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 contributors, the top newest editor, and the outstanding female editor in both the English and Igbo communities. This aims to celebrate participant efforts and sustain engagement beyond the campaign.

By organizing this event, we aim to gain knowledge and achieve specific learning outcomes: 1. Project management: As the project lead and facilitator, we aim to strengthen our project management skills by taking full responsibility for planning, coordinating, and executing all aspects of the project. This includes managing resources, guiding volunteers, and ensuring that every activity aligns with the overall objectives. We will also seek to explore and highlight the significant roles women play in society, and Africa at large by using this project as a platform to better understand, document, and amplify their contributions.

2. Community Building: Our goal is to understand how communities grow and to identify the key factors and areas of interest that inspire volunteers to stay committed. We plan to implement strategies that foster long-term engagement by offering consistent support, mentorship, and sharing future Wikimedia opportunities to keep participants involved even after the project ends. In addition, our collaboration with other communities such as STEMLab Africa and AIESEC Nigeria will offer valuable insight into how different ecosystems operate. These partnerships will not only help us refine our community-building strategies but also create a cross-learning experience that benefits everyone involved.

3. Enhanced editing skills: Through hands-on participation in editing Wikiquote, we aim to enhance our skills in article creation, improvement, citation, and sourcing standards. This will not only benefit our contributions to this project but also improve our overall proficiency in editing Wikimedia projects.

4. Editor’s Challenges: Through this project, we aim to identify challenges contributors face when making contributions to projects focused on gender equity. The insights gained will help us address issues effectively for this project and future Wikimedia projects we lead as a team.
