[edit]
1. Please state the title of your proposal. This will also be the Meta-Wiki page title.

South Kazakhstan Youth Wikipedia Program

2. and 3. Proposed start and end dates for the proposal.

2026-03-01 - 2026-03-04

4. Where will this proposal be implemented? (required)

Kazakhstan

5. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign, project, or event? If so, please select the relevant project or campaign. (required)

Other (please specify) Regional program

6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

Through this program, we aim to work with a new generation of Wikimedians in South Kazakhstan (Shymkent, Turkestan region), one of the largest regions of Kazakhstan, with a population of about 5 million people. In South Kazakhstan, there are approximately 9 categories, 12 pages of articles in the Shymkent category, and 11 categories, 36 articles in the Turkestan region category; however, there are only 48 articles about them in the Kazakh Wikipedia. Our goal is to reduce this gap through the regional program in South Kazakhstan.

Villages and districts in South Kazakhstan are poorly represented on the Internet, but there are materials available through the central library of the region and popular, important sites.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

Day 1: We will gather participants for a workshop and provide them with practical, hands-on lessons on how to create a Wikimedia account, edit and create articles on Wikipedia, and upload media files to Wikimedia Commons.

Day 2: Participants will create articles about people and regions of South Kazakhstan using links from the Central Library of the region.

Day 3: We will visit historical sites and landmarks in Shymkent. Participants will take many photos during the photo walk. In addition, despite the fact that the city of Turkestan, with its more than 2000 years of history, is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, it is still underrepresented on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. We will bridge this gap through the program.

After the workshop, we will organize a month-long editing marathon among participants.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

Muzaffar Turgunov - Head of the main organizing team and responsible for general issues. Wiki Auezov - Experienced Wikimedian, head of the Wikipedia_Auezov student club. Azizbek Serikbayev - Volunteer, responsible for preparing the venue. Mahmud Abduvaliyev - Volunteer

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

First of all, we will announce the seminar and open the facility. In addition, I plan to work with the local Wikipedian student club to help me choose to participate. For example, the student club is ready to list all school and university students who are interested in free education at the third largest university in Kazakhstan. A large monitor and laptop will be set up for free, which is ideal for practical classes without any problems at the university or elsewhere. The seminar itself was promoted on the wiki by posting the CentralNotice banner in Kazakh, Russian and English for anyone from South Kazakhstan.

Although the Wiki Auezov club currently has only a few members, we plan to invite all seminar participants to the club and invite them to participate in future events.

10. Does your project involve work with children or youth? (required)

Yes

10.1. Please provide a link to your Youth Safety Policy. (required) If the proposal indicates direct contact with children or youth, you are required to outline compliance with international and local laws for working with children and youth, and provide a youth safety policy aligned with these laws. Read more here.

All contacts with them are made under Law of Republic of Kazakhstan https://adilet.zan.kz/eng/docs/Z020000345_

11. How did you discuss the idea of your project with your community members and/or any relevant groups? Please describe steps taken and provide links to any on-wiki community discussion(s) about the proposal. (required) You need to inform the community and/or group, discuss the project with them, and involve them in planning this proposal. You also need to align the activities with other projects happening in the planned area of implementation to ensure collaboration within the community.

The proposal received strong community support: More than 15 active editors, including administrators and bureaucrats, participated in the discussion and explicitly voted in favor of the project.

This demonstrates that the initiative is well-aligned with the needs and priorities of the Kazakh Wikipedia community. Community members also shared constructive feedback and suggestions, which helped refine the project plan and clarify specific activities.

Learning and metrics

[edit]
17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)

First of all, I am well aware that, although there are reliable sources about the territories and villages of the South Kazakhstan region, at the moment only 2-3 Wikimedia workers from our region are working on this content, and we can create all the articles ourselves. According to our plans, 2 cities from all over South Kazakhstan were selected. After the program, they will continue to create local district Wikiclubs in youth centers, conduct projects, and actively contribute to Wikimedia projects. I think this program will be a starting point for Wikimedia workers from our Kazakh language group for a long time.
