The proposal seeks to enhance the visibility and recognition of women artists, especially those from underrepresented communities, by documenting their biography, work, and contributions on Wikipedia and other sister projects. The project addresses gaps in Wikipedia’s coverage of women artists, promoting a more balanced and inclusive portrayal that fosters deeper cultural understanding. It also focuses on addressing the lack of representation of women artists on Swahili Wikipedia, where their presence remains limited. Moreover, it tackles linguistic and cultural gaps, as much as the existing documentation about women in art is available in other big languages, which leaves the Swahili speaking communities undeserved.
To achieve all, we foresee on organizing capacity building workshops to train local volunteers in Wikipedia editing skills. This will empower them to document the legacies of women artists while equipping them with valuable digital skills as well. In advance, we will also collaborate with art institutions, libraries and museums to gather reliable sources, focusing on those related to African women artists.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
The project’s activities will begin with outreach and recruitment to engage local volunteers, particularly women, who are passionate about art, feminism, and digital literacy. Next, we will organize a series of capacity-building workshops to train volunteers in Wikipedia editing and awareness in general. Furthermore, we will organize an editathon event that will focus on creating articles about women artists, with a special emphasis on those from Africa and the Swahili-speaking world. In collaboration with local art historians, libraries, and museums, we will source reliable materials and take photographs of artworks for use in both articles and WikiCommons.

(required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.
