Application type: Standard application

Part 1: Project and impact

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

The activities we implemented included workshop training, an edit-a-thon, and a local contest. We successfully conducted a workshop to familiarize new volunteers with Wikimedia projects and the overall theme of the project. Through this, we recruited over 20 new volunteers, the majority of whom were women. Also, we organized edit-a-thons to provide hands-on experience for both new and experienced volunteers. During these events, over 200 articles related to women in art were created and edited on the Swahili Wikipedia.

Finally, we hosted a local contest that further emphasized article creation, leading to the development and editing of over 500 more articles.

Collaboration with local institutions played a key role in recruiting new volunteers. Additionally, working closely with the local community proved invaluable, as the support from experienced volunteers was essential to the success of this project.

Part 2: Learning

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: 1. To what extent has women in art content contributed to free knowledge? 2. How many volunteer editors have we increased their capacity towards contributing content to the Wikimedia project? 3. To what extent have we contributed to advancing A+F and Wikimedia objectives through the African women's art industry? 4. To what extent have we increased the representation of women artists on Swahili Wikipedia?

When implementing the project, the learning questions served as crucial guides for evaluating the impact of our efforts. Over time, more than 500 contributions were added to Swahili Wikipedia, increasing accessibility to information, particularly for Swahili-speaking communities where there was little content on women in art.

We also recruited over 20 new volunteer editors, most of whom were women. They gained valuable skills in editing and contributing to Wikimedia projects, with many continuing to be active contributors.

By focusing on African women artists, the project helped fill a gap in Wikipedia’s coverage, advancing both Art+Feminism and Wikimedia's goals of diversity and representation.

Finally, we increased the representation of women artists on Swahili Wikipedia, where there was little content in this area before. This project has created a lasting ripple effect, encouraging further contributions and highlighting women in the arts.

Looking ahead, we plan to build on these lessons by recruiting more editors and expanding the project further.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

During the workshop training, an unexpected but positive situation occurred when a staff member from Tabora Network College attended the session. She was impressed by the content and asked if it would be possible to host a similar event at their college to train both staff and students about Wikimedia projects. This request turned out to be a significant opportunity, contributing greatly to the success of our project.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

I shared it through social media and diff platform.
