November is recognized globally as Transgender Awareness Month (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transgender_Awareness_Week) and in 2024, we initiated the first-ever Trans Wiki Awareness campaign in Nigeria (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Programs/Wikimedia_Community_Fund/Rapid_Fund/Trans_Awareness_Month_Celebration_edit-a-thon_in_Nigeria_(ID:_22757213)/Final_Report), which engaged over 70 participants and led to the creation and improvement of more than 50 Wikipedia articles on transgender-related topics.

The main challenge we are addressing is the limited visibility and representation of transgender and non-binary persons in Nigerian digital spaces, particularly on the Wikimedia projects, where their stories, history, and lived realities remain under-documented. This invisibility contributes to broader societal erasure, stigma, and misinformation about transgender people.

This year, we aim to build on last year’s learning to make the initiative more impactful. Our approach includes partnering with at least three transgender-led organizations to strengthen community ownership and outreach, training transgender and non-binary persons, alongside allies on contributing to the Wikimedia projects and organizing a month-long TransVisibility Contest that will engage contributors across Nigeria to create and improve articles related to transgender topics, ensuring wider participation and sustained impact.

Through this, we hope to not only increase the quantity and quality of content about transgender people on Wikipedia but also empower marginalized voices to tell their own stories and foster inclusivity within the Nigerian Wikimedia community. And will ensure the safety of participants by partnering with foremost Trans organizations in Nigeria.

Thereafter, we will have a various training programs with the 3 partnered organizations to train various transpersons across 3 cities in Nigeria.

FEMMEHIVE, TRANSGENDER NIGERIAN SUPPORT, Queer City Media, and The Initiative For Equal Rights will be our partners throughout this program.
