Rapid Fund Final Report

Application type: Standard application

Part 1: Project and impact

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

The project was successful and implemented as a month-long campaign combining an online Trans Visibility contest and in-person training. The project began with a public contest on November 1, engaging contributors nationwide to create and improve transgender-related content on Wikipedia and Wikidata.

Between November 25th to 30th, we held the virtual and in-person residential trainings in partnership with transgender-led organizations, ISHRAI Nigeria, which proved very vital and supportive for the project.

The project resulted in increased participation from underrepresented communities, new and improved transgender-related content across Wikimedia projects, and greater confidence among participants to contribute their own narratives.

The most effective approaches were partnering with trusted transgender-led organizations, combining in-person capacity building with an online contest for wider reach, and prioritizing safety and inclusion through supportive learning environments.

Part 2: Learning

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: What strategy to use in ensuring more Wikimedia content about trans, non-binary, and intersex persons in Nigeria and across West Africa

This was vital as i understand the scope around trans contents and will do well to innovate on it going forward

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

Yes, several unexpected situations emerged during the implementation of the project, offering valuable learning opportunities.

On the positive side, there was higher-than-anticipated interest from transgender and non-binary participants, particularly during the in-person trainings. Many participants were first-time editors but showed strong enthusiasm and quickly gained confidence in contributing to Wikimedia projects. This reaffirmed the importance of creating intentional, safe spaces and confirmed that there is significant unmet demand for capacity-building initiatives focused on transgender communities in Nigeria.

On the challenging side, internet connectivity and IP block range affected the pace of live editing sessions. Additionally, a few participants required more time and follow-up support than initially planned due to varying levels of digital literacy. To address this, facilitators adapted by providing offline guidance, extending mentorship beyond the sessions, and offering continued virtual support during the contest period.

From these experiences, we learned the importance of building flexibility into project timelines, planning for infrastructure-related constraints, and allocating additional support for first-time contributors. We also learned that strong partnerships with community-led organizations significantly improve participant trust, engagement, and retention, especially when working with marginalized communities.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

We plan to share the learnings and results from this project with the wider Wikimedia and LGBTQ+ communities through multiple channels. A detailed project report, including outcomes, metrics, and key learnings, will be published on Meta-Wiki to ensure transparency and accessibility to other community members. And as a diff blog will be published.
