The present application aims to support a new academic use of Wikimedia projects, moving beyond the organization of translation editathons with students in our Translation Studies programmes. Specifically, we seek to explore the potential of Wikipedia pages—both existing entries and those created during our translatathons—from a corpus linguistics perspective.
To this end, we would like to take advantage of a tailored training programme on the use of Sketch Engine, a platform for the investigation and compilation of multilingual corpora, including those based on Wikipedia content. The Wikimedia Foundation has previously funded a project that covered the purchase of a one-year licence for Sketch Engine. We are now applying for funds to support advanced training in the use of Sketch Engine, with a particular focus on the Wikipedia corpus available within the tool, as well as specialized training in the creation of parallel and comparable corpora using Wikipedia pages. We expect that corpus-based studies of Wikipedia pages may yield valuable data for critical disourse analysis and cross-cultural comparisons in areas such as the representation of historical events and gender bias.
The use of Wikipedia in corpus linguistics is a well-established approach, including in the applicant’s book The Web as Corpus (Bloomsbury, 2014, pp. 137–161). Further information about the Wikipedia corpus in Sketch Engine is available at: https://www.sketchengine.eu/english-wikipedia-corpus/

Furthermore, research on Wikipedia pages from the point of view of cross-cultural comparison can be enhanced by the availability of Wikipedia-based parallel/comparable corpora for specific language pairs. The long term result is to raise awareness in the academic community (with specific reference to the linguistics and translation studies community) of the enormous potential of Wikipedia as both a teaching and research environment.
