It is a clear fact that Women’s knowledge and contributions to the world are invisible in many ways. When I look at Nigerian women’s visibility I found out that ONLY 24.9% of Wikipedia biographies related to Nigerian people represent women as can be seen on the data collected by the Humanwiki here - https://humaniki.wmcloud.org/gender-by-country. Also, the challenge exists on Fulfulde Wikipedia where only 37% of the all biography articles represent women and as can be seen here in this SPARQL query https://w.wiki/FqwC or the result here https://w.wiki/FqwJ. This proves beyond doubts that there is an existing visible lack of high-quality Fulfulde language contents across the Wikimedia projects, especially the articles about Fula women and other African women. While in the other hand, it simply shows that many Fula women, especially those in rural areas, face important barriers to accessing technology and the internet which limits their ability to participate in Wikimedia projects and therefore leading to this existential gap since women are underrepresented among Wikimedia editors globally, and this is particularly evident among Fulfulde-speaking communities.
Our objective is to greatly enhance the visibility and representation of Fula women, women from Nigeria and Africa on Wikimedia projects, particularly on Fulfulde Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikiqoute and Wikimedia Commons. By organizing a series of activities with focus on the International Women's Day. We will use the opportunity to encourage participating editors to develop and refine contents related to Fula and African women and the history, culture, and society of Northern Nigeria and Africa.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
We will adopt the following strategies in organizing the planned activities.
- Conduct two days of physical workshops and two days of online training and mentoring: These events will provide training on editing Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikiqoute and Wikimedia Commons, and focusing on Fula women and their history, culture, and social life in Northern Nigeria.
- Search prominent Fula women in the diaspora: we will identify and research prominent Fula women living outside Nigeria and create articles about them on Wikipedia, Wikiqoute and Wikidata.
- Develop multimedia content for Wikimedia Commons: we will encourage participants to produce high-quality images, videos, and audio files related to Fula women and Northern Nigeria, and then upload them to Wikimedia Commons.
- Technical support and guidance: we will provide ongoing support and technical advice to participants to ensure their continued engagement in the Wikimedia project.
- 8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details.
