1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

Law librarians provide legal information in law schools, private law firms, and government libraries. They are involved in teaching research methods, conducting legal research, and selecting and acquiring legal resources for their organizations. Moreover, they organize orientation programs for new law students on how to use the law library and research materials. However, Law librarians in Lagos state have little or no knowledge about Wikipedia and its sister projects. We had a WikiGlam awareness for librarians in June 2022 (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid/WikiGlam_Awareness_for_Librarians_in_Lagos_State) and the success of the project had a ripple effect which today the Law librarians and the other library professionals that heard about the first training are interested in learning about Wikipedia. In addition, there is inadequate data about the private law firms, law libraries, and law librarians in Nigeria on Wikidata. Queries on Wikidata: https://query.wikidata.org/querybuilder/?uselang=en and https://query.wikidata.org/querybuilder/?uselang=en showed only one (1) law librarian and library. Whereas there are over 50 law librarians in the WhatsApp group of Nigerian Association of Law Librarians Lagos state Chapter . Also, Law librarians work with renowned lawyers and judges, and this training will enable them to create Wikidata items and write articles about notable lawyers, law firms, and judges. Moreso, we have books written by renowned Nigerian lawyers without information about the books on Wikidata.

The goal of this project is to:

  • Enable Law Librarians and other library professionals to become content creators on Wikipedia and create visibility for their libraries and collections.
  • The Law librarians and the other librarians we want to train can teach and help law students know about using Wikipedia as a starting point for their research work and references.
2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

• Recruiting 60 new and existing editors from Law firm libraries, court libraries and the Faculty of Law Library, Nigerian Library association

  • Increase the awareness of Wikipedia and its sister projects and broaden their knowledge on how to use Wikipedia as a starting point for research work and references, while improving their information literacy skills.
  • Participants will be trained on how to run queries to understand the data gaps on Wikidata about Nigerian Law Books, Lawyers, and Judges.
  • Participants will be trained on creating and improving Wikidata items about Nigerian law firms, law books, notable lawyers, and judges.
  • Participants will be trained in contributing to Wikimedia projects by creating Wikipedia accounts, understanding general editing principles, performing minor edits, creating categories, and templates, expanding Wikipedia articles about Law Libraries, Law Firms, Lawyers, and Judges in Nigeria, and using Wikipedia's article creation wizard.
  • Provide editors with one-to-one support through an outreach dashboard, hashtag tools, and article listing methods.
  • A google doc page was created to show a list of topics and articles that are missing on Wikipedia and Wikidata. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1tmBx0lKW57xNo6PhTS96dWnOJPAUi3DJHCYImEux68U/edit
3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

The implementation of the Wikipedia training for Nigerian law librarians and other librarians in Lagos state will run for a period of six weeks to introduce, train, and improve articles/items about Law Libraries, Law firms, Lawyers, and Judges on Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikicommons. The strategies that will be adopted in carrying out the project will include:

1. Four (4) days of an in-person (physical) event for law librarians and other librarians
2. Six (6) series of online follow-up training during the campaign to properly equip them with needed skills about how to edit on Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikicommons.
