1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

I have finished secondary school in Nigeria. but I have not gotten admission to enter the University. I am attending a study centre which prepares students that has graduated from secondary school and preparing to take the Joint Universities Preliminary Examination Board (JUPEB) examination or the Advance Level General Certificate in Education (GCE) examination. These two examinations are A level examination that allows one to enter university as direct entry in year 2. There are many study centres in Niger State, FCT, Nasarawa State and other states in Northern Nigeria that we collaborate with. I found out that many of my colleagues do not know about Wikipedia. Even when most of us have laptops or smart phone and used to the internet, many have not heard of Wikipedia. I think that this is the right time to introduce people of my set to Wikipedia so that if the knowledge begins to spread among people in different study centres across Northern Nigeria that we are, it will make it easy for us to introduce it to our colleagues in the different universities that we will enter when we finish our studies.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

I intend to organise an edit a thon training/competition for secondary school leavers who are studying in the different study centres between Niger State and Abuja. This includes areas like Gwagwalada, Zuba, Suleja, Kuje, Lugbe etc. As a student in one of these study centres will have different social medias that we talk to each other. We also meet on some occasions. There are also study groups from these centres. I will want to circulate information about Wikipedia to these people. I will also tell them about the training. Because many of us in our age are used to internet and are student who are struggling to get more knowledge, I am convinced that many of us will be happy to get this knowledge. All the people I mentioned this idea to are already exited about it. During the edit a thon, participants will be trained on the different projects of Wikipedia. The trainings will be spread with each session taking place 2 weeks after the previous one. Each session will teach one wiki project. Participants will then be encouraged to edit on the project trained. There will be competition between participants on who will do more editing before the next two weeks when another wiki project will be thought. Participants will be trained on Wikipedia, wikidata and wiki commons. After the 3 sessions for these 3 projects, there will be a 4th session where a rehash of all the 3 projects will be done, the result of the competition announced and prices given.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

I will inform students in the different study centres that we will be organising the training through various means including the social media. I will also produce short banners that will carry all these information to be placed in these study centres. I will ask interested persons to express interest by filling an online google form. The form is to give me an idea of the number of persons that will participate and to know whether I should do more work to get more participants before the training. During the programme, all person that attend will be allowed to participate. I will also inform members of Abuja Hub of Wikimedia User Group Nigeria and seek for their support in organising the programme. I will speak and plan with the resource persons and make sure that we all agree on the different dates for the programmes and how it will be carried out. There will be 4 edit a thon training/competition. The 1st one will be used to introduce them to Wikipedia and train on Wikipedia commons. They will also be informed that the competition has started from that first day. 2 weeks after, the 2nd session will hold where they will be trained on Wikidata. The 3rd session will be training on Wikipedia while the 4th session will be to review any challenge they may be having in any of the things they were thought. It will also be the day for presentation of prices for the 1st and 2nd highest editor for each of the 3 project that they were trained on. A whatsapp group will be created from the time that individuals start filling form to participate. Every participant will be on the whatsapp group including the resource persons. We will use this forum to continue to encourage everyone and answer questions from participants. We will use the group chat to also follow up on every participant after the programme

6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Age (regency)

6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

I think that my work will fill the content gap for people in my generation and level in life. When I attend Wikipedia programmes, it is always mostly graduates and, on some occasions, university students. We feel removed from most of the activities yet we are more used to doing things online.

7. Please state if your proposal includes any of these areas or THEMATIC focus. Select up to THREE that most apply to your work and explain the rationale for identifying these themes.

Advocacy

8. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?

Age

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?

Participants will be students who have finished secondary school but have not entered university. May of us are presently at different study centres where we are studying for either A level General Certificate of Education (GCE) or Joint Universities Preliminary Examination Board (JUPEB). Some are also studying the Interim Joint Matriculation Board Examination (IJMBE). These exams prepare one for direct entry into university courses. I am a student in one of the study centres and we have many study centres between lugbe, Kuje, Gwagwalada, Zuba and suleja. We also have social media platforms. I will reach out to them through these centres and social media platforms. I will also put banners in some of these centres inviting them to participate. All participants will join the whatsapp group which we will use to keep following up on our members even after the programme

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

The invitation for the programme will be to all students at these study centres. Any one who comes to the progamme will be accepted to participate. In fact any other person who attends will be allowed to participate even if he or she is not a student. All participants will be treated equally

11. Please tell us about how you have let your Wikimedia communities know about the planned activities and this proposal. Use this space to describe the processes you carried out to make the community more involved in planning this proposal. Please link the on-wiki community discussion(s) around the proposals.
