Brazil's lush and diverse natural landscapes are genuinely awe-inspiring. From the vast stretches of the Amazon rainforest to the stunning waterfalls of Iguazu, the country boasts a myriad of protected natural sites that showcase its rich biodiversity. However, there is a significant problem—the sites' scarcity of free photographs limits their potential for raising awareness and promoting them to a larger audience.

This shortage of images makes it challenging for people to learn about and appreciate these natural treasures, leaving them underappreciated and underutilized. To address this issue, we need to increase the availability of free photographs of Brazil's protected natural sites. This would make it easier for people to learn about and appreciate these areas, promote the importance of preserving them, and encourage more people to visit, thus supporting conservation efforts.

Despite Brazil's vast and unique biodiversity, the country is experiencing a significant loss, primarily due to deforestation, land use changes, and climate change. One of the most devastating consequences of biodiversity loss is the endangerment of many animal species in Brazil. Habitat destruction, hunting, and climate change are the main factors contributing to this problem.

This biodiversity loss has dire consequences for ecosystems, their services, and human well-being. Raising awareness about the loss of biodiversity in Brazil and the importance of protecting and conserving it is essential. Increasing public knowledge and understanding can encourage people to take action to reduce their impact on the environment and support conservation efforts.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

Executive Plan: Wiki Loves Earth Brazil 2025 (Aligned with Wikimedia Strategy 2030 & SDGs)

[edit]

1. Introduction: Project Summary

This section outlines the executive plan for Wiki Loves Earth Brazil 2025 (WLE BR 2025), a strategic initiative led by Foto.wiki.br. Building on four years of success, this project aims to significantly increase participation, enhance the quality and quantity of freely licensed photographs of Brazil's protected natural sites on Wikimedia Commons, and foster greater public awareness about biodiversity conservation. Key components include an expanded social media campaign, simplified entry processes, community building, fair jury training, post-contest documentation, and a 7-day biodiversity documentation expedition for two winners to the critically under-documented Viruá National Park in Roraima. The project leverages Foto.wiki.br's audiovisual expertise and agile management, aligning directly with the Wikimedia Movement Strategy 2030 (Recommendations 1, 2, 6, 8, 9, 10) and UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

2. Rationale and Motivation

Overall WLE BR 2025 Rationale: Brazil's vast natural heritage is significantly underrepresented by high-quality, freely licensed photographs on Wikimedia platforms. This scarcity limits public understanding, education, research, and conservation efforts. WLE BR 2025 addresses this by:

  • Increasing Visual Representation: Mobilizing photographers to contribute images of protected areas, enriching Wikimedia Commons.
  • Fostering Public Awareness: Using the contest and campaigns to highlight Brazil's biodiversity and the need for conservation.
  • Bridging Knowledge Gaps: Contributing to a comprehensive visual inventory of Brazil's natural heritage, making knowledge freely accessible globally.
  • Engaging New Contributors: Providing an accessible entry point for photography and conservation enthusiasts into the Wikimedia movement.

This aligns with Wikimedia Strategy 2030's goals of Knowledge Equity (documenting underrepresented heritage) and Knowledge as a Service (making visual information accessible).

Expedition Rationale: Focusing on Viruá National Park, Roraima:

The state of Roraima, and Viruá National Park specifically, exemplifies the critical visual content gap on Wikimedia Commons. Past WLE submissions from Roraima are extremely scarce (25 photos in 2020, 1 in 2023) compared to other regions. This lack of visual data hinders understanding and appreciation of this unique area. Viruá is pre-selected for the expedition due to:

  • Exceptional & Underrepresented Biodiversity: Known as a "biodiversity champion," Viruá holds immense vertebrate diversity (comparable to Europe) and unique ecosystems like northern Roraima wetlands (pantanal setentrional), campinaranas, and complex river systems, all poorly documented visually. Documenting these addresses Knowledge Equity.
  • Critical Wikimedia Commons Content Gap: The pronounced lack of readily available images hinders researchers, educators, and conservationists. Filling this gap is a core objective aligning with Strategy 2030's Recommendation 8 (Identify Topics for Impact).
  • High Conservation Impact Potential: As a refuge for rare Amazonian species, high-quality imagery from Viruá can directly support conservation by raising awareness and facilitating research.
  • Research Interest & Potential: While a site of scientific interest, visual documentation is lacking. This expedition can provide valuable baseline visual data, supporting ongoing research and aligning with Knowledge as a Service.
  • Logistical Feasibility (Challenging but Achievable): Despite remoteness, Viruá has defined access points (Estrada Perdida, Rio Iruá boat access) and basic infrastructure (base, camping, research trails). These factors, combined with a skilled team, make the target of 700 photos in 7 days ambitious yet feasible.

Focusing the expedition on Viruá allows Foto.wiki.br to make a significant, targeted contribution, bridging a critical knowledge gap, promoting conservation, and enriching Wikimedia Commons with invaluable resources, directly supporting the Wikimedia movement's goals.

3. Challenges Addressed

WLE BR 2025 is specifically designed to overcome key challenges:

  • Limited Access to Imagery: The severe lack of freely available, high-resolution photographs for many Brazilian protected natural sites, particularly those in remote or less-visited regions. This directly impacts the quality and completeness of Wikimedia projects related to Brazilian geography and biodiversity.
  • Public Disconnect: The existing gap in public awareness and understanding regarding the importance of biodiversity conservation and the specific role of protected areas within Brazil. Visual storytelling through photography is a powerful means to bridge this disconnect.
  • Barriers to Participation: Simplifying the photo submission process (e.g., through Upload Wizard optimization and clear tutorials) and providing multilingual support aims to lower barriers for newcomers and encourage broader participation, especially from diverse geographic regions within Brazil, contributing to a more inclusive Wikimedia ecosystem as envisioned in the Strategy 2030.

4. Project Aims & Goals

The primary aim is to significantly increase participation in the WLE BR 2025 photo contest and substantially enhance the quantity and quality of freely licensed images depicting Brazilian protected areas on Wikimedia Commons.

Specific Goals (SMART) & Alignment:

  • Specific: Execute a comprehensive outreach campaign (commencing May 26th), manage the WLE BR 2025 photo contest, and conduct a 7-day biodiversity documentation expedition for two selected winners to a National Park in Rondônia/Roraima.
  • Measurable:

Distribute backups among team if feasible. Use reliable storage media. Invest in robust, high-capacity storage solutions. Implement cloud backup strategies where connectivity allows. Minimal residual risk if protocols are strictly followed.
Failure to Meet Photo Quota (Expedition) M M Medium Project Goals, Reporting to Funders Insufficient visual content generated, inability to fully document biodiversity/heritage, difficulty illustrating related articles, potential disappointment. Overly ambitious targets, unexpected field challenges (weather, access, elusive wildlife), insufficient time, team issues. Set realistic daily targets. Use agile approach to adapt focus. Ensure team is skilled/equipped. Motivate team/manage time effectively. Prioritize key shots. Refine target-setting process based on expedition learnings. Improve pre-expedition scouting/research. Actual photo count might vary slightly from target due to field conditions.
Conflict within Expedition Team L M Low Team Morale, Project Execution, Photo Quality Reduced collaboration, poor communication, negative atmosphere, potential impact on productivity and quality of work. Personality clashes, differing expectations, stress of fieldwork, unclear roles. Clear roles/responsibilities. Team agreements/ground rules. Open communication/daily check-ins. Designated conflict resolution points. Foster collaborative spirit. Invest in team-building and conflict resolution training for core members. Improve team selection process. Minor disagreements are possible in high-stress environments.
Negative Feedback/Criticism (Contest/Expedition) L M Low Foto.wiki.br Reputation, Community Trust Damage to public image, loss of community trust, difficulty attracting future participants/partners/funders. Unclear rules, perceived unfairness (judging), poor communication, negative interactions during expedition. Maintain transparency in all processes. Respond promptly/respectfully to feedback. Address concerns constructively. Highlight positive impacts. Adhere to ethical standards. Develop a proactive communication strategy. Establish clear feedback channels. Monitor online sentiment. Impossible to please everyone; focus is on fair process and open comms.
Ethical Concerns (Photography/Community Interaction) L M Low Foto.wiki.br Reputation, Affected Individuals/Communities Harm to individuals/communities, damage to relationships, legal issues, violation of Wikimedia principles, negative press. Lack of awareness/training, cultural insensitivity, failure to obtain consent, intrusive behaviour. Provide clear ethical guidelines during training. Ensure informed consent. Respect wildlife/environment/local culture. Adhere to UCoC/FSP. Develop specific ethical guidelines for different contexts (wildlife, people, heritage). Provide ongoing ethics training. Constant vigilance and sensitivity required.
Changes in WMF Policies/Priorities L M Low Project Alignment, Future Funding Need to adapt project activities, potential misalignment with funding priorities, increased reporting requirements. Evolution of the Wikimedia movement and its strategic direction. Stay informed about WMF strategies/grant requirements. Maintain communication with WMF staff/liaisons. Be prepared to adapt project elements. Foster adaptability within Foto.wiki.br's strategic planning. Participate actively in movement strategy discussions. Need for ongoing monitoring and potential adaptation.
Local Community Issues/Opposition - Expedition L L Low Expedition Access, Local Relationships Denial of access to areas, negative interactions, damage to local relationships, project delays. Lack of prior engagement, misunderstanding of project goals, perceived negative impacts. Engage respectfully before expedition if possible/needed (via partners/researcher). Clearly communicate goals/benefits. Address concerns. Minimize local disruption. Build long-term, trust-based relationships with key communities in areas of interest. Develop community benefit components for projects. Minor misunderstandings are possible but unlikely with proper engagement.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

Our team comprises over 40 photographers specializing in various types of nature photography, such as wildlife, landscapes, and macrophotography. These photographers have worked for prestigious organizations like BBC, National Geographic, etc. All team members are volunteers, dedicating their time and expertise to the Wiki Loves Earth initiative. Many of our team members are also science communicators, passionate about sharing knowledge and raising awareness about environmental issues. Additionally, we have experts in social media, particularly among science communicators.

9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)

Our target participants are Brazilians interested in nature photography and environmental conservation. We will focus on engaging those less represented in the Wikimedia Environment. We will engage them through various means, including social media outreach, targeted email campaigns, and personal invitations to participate in Wiki Loves Earth. Promotion will include social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, as well as reaching out to local photography groups and associations. Additionally, we plan to host a photo exhibition featuring previous WLE participants. After the contest, we plan to maintain momentum with a fun and exciting photo expedition. This expedition will explore local areas of interest, offering opportunities for participants to meet like-minded people, learn new skills, and engage with the Wikimedia community. To retain participants, we are creating a supportive network of photographers where they can share their work, seek feedback, and continue learning from each other. Workshops will also be offered for those wishing to develop their skills further and contribute to Wikimedia Environment through photography.
