Grants:Programs/Wikimedia Community Fund/Rapid Fund/WLE Brazil 2025 (ID: 23058812)/Final Report
Application type: Standard application
Part 1: Project and impact
1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)
This report outlines the successful completion of the proposed activities for Wiki Loves Earth Brazil 2025.
The strategic initiative, led by Foto.wiki.br, has successfully concluded, building upon four years of project advancements. The primary goals were fully achieved: to broaden participation, enhance both the quality and quantity of freely licensed photographs of Brazil's protected natural areas on Wikimedia Commons, and to promote greater public awareness regarding biodiversity conservation.
All key activities from the executive plan were effectively implemented. An expanded social media campaign led to a significant increase in engagement and participant numbers across the country. The simplification of entry processes successfully removed barriers to entry, enabling a wider and more diverse audience to contribute to the project.
Community-building efforts, combined with fair and qualified jury training, were crucial in ensuring the high standard of the selected images. All post-contest documentation was completed, meticulously recording the outcomes and lessons learned from this edition.
A highlight of the project was the 7-day biodiversity documentation expedition awarded to two winners. The expedition to Viruá National Park in Roraima, a critically under-documented region, was carried out successfully. This effort generated a valuable collection of images that now enriches Wikimedia Commons, showcasing the park's exceptional biodiversity. The project was executed leveraging Foto.wiki.br's audiovisual expertise and agile management, reinforcing its commitment to free knowledge and sustainability.

Part 2: Learning
4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)
You can recall these learning questions below: We get to some questions we want to answer by the end of WLE: How many contributors and photos did WLE bring? How have participants' perspectives on biodiversity conservation changed after participating? What factors could motivate participants to continue contributing to Wikimedia Envoriment after the WLE? What were the barriers? How effective was the WLE in bringing in new participants or communities? Did participants feel welcome, safe, and supported during the WLE? What were some ongoing challenges? Did participants gain the skills and motivation necessary to continue contributing to Wikimedia projects? Did new organizers develop the skills and motivation needed to continue participating as organizers? What types of support and activities interest participants who want to learn more about the Wikimedia community?
- How many contributors and photos did WLE bring? We had a total of 2,680 images uploaded https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Images_from_Wiki_Loves_Earth_2025_in_Brazil and 161 participants https://quarry.wmcloud.org/query/97251 .
- How have participants' perspectives on biodiversity conservation changed after participating?
There was a noticeable increase in appreciation for conservation areas and a desire to share the acquired knowledge to inspire others. In this way, the project contributed to strengthening a culture of belonging and environmental responsibility, in which art and conservation meet in a common purpose.
- What factors could motivate participants to continue contributing to Wikimedia Environment after the WLE?
A key factor is the feeling of belonging to the Wikimedia community: a collaborative and global space where knowledge is freely shared. The exchange with other photographers, researchers, and volunteers strengthens bonds and encourages continuous learning about environmental, technical, and cultural topics.
The recognition received during the competition, along with opportunities for training and visibility for new projects, also acts as an important driver of engagement. Many participants expressed interest in continuing to contribute as a way of giving back for the experience, using photography and content editing as tools for transformation and environmental awareness.
- What were the barriers?
Among the potential barriers observed were limited access to suitable photographic equipment and difficulty traveling to more remote natural areas, which restricted the participation of some interested parties. Furthermore, unfamiliarity with Wikimedia platforms and the processes of uploading and free licensing represented an initial technical challenge for some participants.
The need for greater integration between the Wikimedia community and new contributors was also identified, to strengthen the sense of belonging and continuity after the competition. Despite these barriers, the organizing team offered technical and educational support, which helped to reduce difficulties and increase overall engagement.
- How effective was the WLE in bringing in new participants or communities?
Wiki Loves Earth demonstrated a great capacity to attract new participants and strengthen communities interested in the environment and photography. The proposal to combine visual documentation with biodiversity conservation sparked engagement from people of different profiles, from beginner photographers to nature observers and environmental educators.
The collaborative nature of the contest, combined with the visibility provided by Wikimedia platforms, encouraged continuous participation and sharing. In this way, WLE not only expanded the number of contributors but also diversified the network, bringing together new voices and perspectives committed to valuing natural heritage.
- Did participants feel welcome, safe, and supported during the WLE?
The organizing team provided technical and logistical guidance, fostering an environment of exchange, learning, and trust.
It is worth highlighting that we received no negative feedback related to this aspect, indicating that the experience satisfactorily met the expectations of photographers of all levels, strengthening their engagement and connection with biodiversity conservation.
- What were some ongoing challenges?
Some of the ongoing challenges identified during the WLE include limited access to more remote natural areas, which can hinder the participation of photographers from different regions, and the need for familiarization with Wikimedia platforms and the upload and free licensing processes, which still represent technical barriers for some contributors.
Furthermore, although the initiative has promoted engagement and a sense of belonging, there is always the challenge of maintaining continued participation after the contest, encouraging contributors to remain active in the community and contribute regularly to the documentation and preservation of natural heritage.
- Did participants gain the skills and motivation necessary to continue contributing to Wikimedia projects?
Participants gained greater confidence and motivation to continue contributing to Wikimedia projects. The WLE experience allowed them to explore different ecosystems and share their records with the community in an ethical and responsible manner.
In addition to practical skills, the project strengthened their sense of belonging and collaboration, inspiring participants to continuously engage in documenting biodiversity and promoting environmental conservation.
- Did new organizers develop the skills and motivation needed to continue participating as organizers?
The practical experience of planning, monitoring participants, and managing activities provided valuable learning about organizing contests, communicating with collaborators, and promoting conservation initiatives.
In addition to the skills acquired, engagement with the Wikimedia community and direct contact with photographers and experts strengthened their sense of belonging and responsibility, encouraging their continued participation as active and committed organizers.
- What types of support and activities interest participants who want to learn more about the Wikimedia community?
Participants wishing to delve deeper into the Wikimedia community have expressed interest in receiving ongoing support and participating in activities that strengthen both technical learning and community connection. Among the most valued types of support are guidance on image uploading and licensing, environmental photography workshops, practical tutorials on editing and organizing content, and close mentoring from more experienced contributors.
Furthermore, integration activities such as discussion groups, mentoring, in-person or online events, and opportunities to collaborate on collective projects help create a sense of belonging and motivate continued participation. This set of support and experiences allows new contributors to develop confidence, knowledge, and lasting engagement in documenting and preserving biodiversity.
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)
Em processo - em razão do pedido de Fundo Geral houve um atraso na criação do relatório outreach e para a comunidade do Wiki Loves Earth.
