Grants:Programs/Wikimedia Community Fund/Rapid Fund/Wiki4Inclusion Campaign in Tanzania Phase 2 (ID: 22916373)/Final Report
Application type: Standard application
Part 1: Project and impact
1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)
The implemented activities were training and edit-a-thons conducted in Dar es salaam and Arusha at Patandi Maalum Secondary School. We conducted two (2) trainings and editathons in Dar es salaam at the Open University of Tanzania and 1 training at Patandi Maalum Secondary after the Phase period because students were in holiday after examination period. They was a change in proposed project start date so this impacted some planned activities at school.
Also, we had online Wikiquote training for participants and videos and images uploads to Wikimedia Commons and our You Channel.
Generally, we trained on Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikiquote. The training and edit-a-thons resulted to a contribution of 73 Wikipedia articles translated from English to Swahili, 50 Images and videos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, 683 Wikidata items improved and 50 Wikiquote articles translated from English to Swahili.
The collaborative approach and team work played a big role for us as were able to implement our activities collaboratively with educational institutions (secondary schools and universities), deaf and sign language interpreters association as well as individuals. For instance, we were able to collaborate with the Open University of Tanzania through its department Assistive Technologies Unit in conducting our workshops at the university as well as Youth Tech and Dunia Salama Foundation in Arusha to implement our activity at Patandi Secondary School.
Moreover, being active on social media and wiki platforms built trust to our stakeholders and partners.

Part 2: Learning
4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)
You can recall these learning questions below: In Phase 2, i hope to learn how impactful the project will be after the implication of the sustainability plans and laying of a foundation in Phase 1 as well as best and creative ways on how we can support people with hearing impairment.
Sustainability plans that were laid in Phase 1 helped to strengthen our mission and we tried to collaborate with other stakeholders to be more impactful. Some observed challenges will be worked on as we move forward.
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
Yes, in some activities we faced short-term power-off due to unreliable electrical power supply, slow internet due to geographical position and IP-Address block problems which led to time consuming during the session taking into consideration that we are dealing with slow learners (hearing impaired people). Also, postponing of some sessions to align with school timetable and procedures due to the change of recommended grant timeline. We learned that our future plans of having owned hub would help much in solving some problems.
Also, we urge the Foundation to help in solving the problem of IP-Address block apart from creative ways that we do to overcome.
6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)
I plan to share project learnings to upcoming Wiki Conferences and meetings where i'll be invited or accepted to present. Also to community organizers seeking for know-how in running similar activities and projects. Moreover, updating our project Meta-Wiki page regularly.
