6. What is the change you are trying to bring? What are the main challenges or problems you are trying to solve? Describe this change or challenges, as well as main approaches to achieve it. (required)

Nigeria has one of the largest populations of young people in the world, and many secondary school students actively use mobile phones and the internet. However, much of this engagement is limited to passive consumption or, at times, harmful and unproductive online activities. There is little awareness among these students about how they can contribute constructively to global knowledge platforms like Wikipedia.

The change we want to bring is to transform secondary school students in Nigeria starting from Lagos state into responsible digital citizens and knowledge creators by:

  • Introducing them early to Wikipedia and sister projects.
  • Training them to document Nigeria’s culture, history, and communities.
  • Establishing sustainable WikiClubs in schools, supported by teachers, so students continue editing after the initial training.

And by this, we will be able to address the lack of awareness among Nigerian students about contributing to Wikipedia.

Our main approach to achieve this change includes:

  • Partnering with 12 public secondary schools in Lagos State, where we already have access.
  • Training the teachers to achieve this feat so they can influence their students.
  • Conducting a series of hands-on Wikipedia trainings as co-curricular activities.
  • Establishing WikiClubs in each school, led by trained teachers, to ensure sustainability.
  • Encouraging students to create and improve articles related to Nigerian culture and history, giving them a sense of pride and ownership in telling their own stories using Simple Wikipedia.
  • By catching them young, we hope to build a new generation of Nigerian Wikipedians who see the internet not just as a tool for entertainment, but as a platform to share and preserve local knowledge.
7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

1. Partnership and coordination

  • Identify and formally partner with 12 public secondary schools in Lagos State where we already have teaching access.
  • Hold planning and training meetings with school administrators and selected teachers who will act as WikiClub coordinators.
  • Prepare training materials (presentations, handouts, editing guides) tailored for secondary school students.
2. Wikipedia training sessions
  • Conduct a series of practical, hands-on Wikipedia training sessions in each of the 12 public schools:
  • 2–3 sessions per school over the course of one month.
  • Cover topics like: “What is Wikipedia?”, introduction to editing, reliable sourcing, writing in neutral point of view, and local content creation using the Simple Wikipedia.
  • Focus on making sessions interactive and accessible, using mobile-friendly editing techniques since most students use smartphones.

3. Establishing sustainable WikiClubs

  • Support each school to officially launch a WikiClub as a co-curricular activity.
  • Train at least one teacher per school to coordinate and mentor students.

4. Content creation and mentoring

Guide students to create or improve articles about:

  • Nigerian cultural heritage (festivals, languages, foods, traditional rulers, etc.)
  • Historical figures relevant to their communities.
  • Offer ongoing support through an online group chat/mentoring platform for students and coordinators.

5. Inter-school online edit-a-thon and showcase

  • At the end of the project period, organize an online edit-a-thon and showcase where all WikiClubs present their contributions.
  • Recognize active editors and WikiClubs with certificates or small prizes to encourage sustained participation.

6. Monitoring and evaluation

  • Track metrics: number of new editors trained, articles created/improved, active club meetings.
  • Gather feedback from students and teachers to assess the project’s impact and improve future initiatives.
  • Prepare and share a final report and learning summary on Meta-Wiki.

8. Describe your team. Please provide their roles, Wikimedia Usernames and other details. (required) Include more details of the team, including their roles, usernames, Wikimedia group, and whether they are salaried, volunteers, consultants/contractors, etc. Team members involved in the grant application need to be aware of their involvement in the project.

Before developing this proposal, we engaged in discussions both offline and online to ensure alignment with the Wikimedia community in Nigeria and relevance to local needs:

Informal consultations

  • We discussed the idea with several active editors and volunteers from the Wikimedia Nigeria User Group, sharing how we aim to create sustainable WikiClubs in Lagos secondary schools.
  • Feedback confirmed that youth engagement and building new editor pipelines are priorities that complement existing initiatives in Nigeria.

Educational network discussions

  • As a secondary school teacher, the project lead held initial conversations with teachers and administrators in the targeted schools.
  • They expressed strong interest in having Wikipedia as part of co-curricular activities and agreed to support WikiClub formation.

Alignment with ongoing projects

The proposal has also been shared on the Wikimedia Nigeria User Group talk page.

Through all of these discussions, the project design was refined to:

  • Focus on students aged 15–18 in class SSS1-3
