As members of the Wikimedia community in Nigeria, we are committed to advancing awareness of critical human rights and environmental issues through the WikiForHumanRights 2025 campaign. Our goal is to document and improve access to information about these challenges using Wikimedia platforms—including Wikipedia (in English and Nigerian languages) and Wikidata—to strengthen knowledge equity and support a more sustainable and just future. In the Nigerian context, fundamental human rights such as the right to life, education, security, housing, clean water, sanitation, and environmental protection are deeply intertwined with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The right of girls and women—especially in Northern Nigeria—to be heard and participate fully in society is also crucial. However, these rights continue to be violated and underrepresented in public discourse, especially in the digital knowledge space.
Identified Gaps and Challenges
Our ongoing analysis reveals critical content gaps within Wikimedia—particularly on Wikipedia and Wikidata—regarding human and environmental rights in Nigeria. These include: Water scarcity and poor sanitation (SDG 6), affecting health, dignity, and quality of life. Environmental degradation—including desertification in the North, coastal erosion in the South, and oil pollution in the Niger Delta—violating the right to a healthy environment (SDG 13). Air pollution and industrial waste in urban and industrial zones, contributing to respiratory illnesses. Deforestation, gully erosion, and poor waste management, disrupting ecosystems and agricultural livelihoods. Limited documentation of human rights associations and defenders working tirelessly for justice, whose voices and efforts remain poorly represented in Wikimedia platforms. Language barriers, particularly for minority communities such as the Igala, whose lack of access to human rights and environmental information in their native language contributes to ongoing exclusion and misinformation.
Building on Past Successes In 2024, we successfully collaborated with seven Wikimedia communities across Nigeria in delivering the WikiForHumanRights campaign. See link to the meta page: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiForHumanRights_2024_in_Nigeria/Home The initiative—recognized as a major success—focused on improving understanding and raising awareness of sustainability-related human rights issues while promoting unity, inclusivity, and local knowledge sharing within the Nigerian Wikimedia movement. Deepening Impact in 2025 The WikiForHumanRights Nigeria 2025 campaign builds on the momentum of last year’s efforts. The change the seven communities are striving to bring about is an enriched understanding and broader awareness of key human rights issues—many of which are already deeply impacting people's lives and threatening our collective future. We aim to deepen national conversations about the human rights that are being infringed across regions, and ensure these issues are well-documented. Research also highlights the ongoing efforts of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of Nigeria, an independent body established to promote and protect human rights. The NHRC continues to work on providing avenues for public enlightenment, research, and dialogue, yet the systemic documentation and dissemination of human rights information across Nigeria remain weak—even for the NHRC. This lack of visibility and public knowledge hampers community action and accountability at a time when rights violations are intensifying. By leveraging the Wikimedia ecosystem, we can help bridge the information gap, equip communities with knowledge, and strengthen the fight against injustice and exclusion. Regional Focus: Environmental and Human Rights Realities The 2025 campaign will document environmental and human rights issues across diverse Nigerian regions: Anambra State Flooding and erosion in riverine areas such as Nanka, Oko, and Agulu communities, which continue to displace families and attract international concern. Epidemics in IDP camps, and the loss of farmland and homes require urgent documentation to protect the right to health, housing, and livelihood.
Kaduna State Industrial emissions in Kakuri and Sabon Tasha harm air quality and health. Deforestation in Kachia threatens indigenous culture and farming. Water scarcity impacts both health and agriculture, especially in rural communities.
Gombe State Climate change and Food Security in Drought-Prone LGAs of Gombe: How Climate Change Impacts the right to food in Gombe State, particularly in drought-prone Local Government Areas (LGAs) such as Dukku, Funakaye, Nafada, and Kaltungo and disrupt children's access to education Women’s access to land remains limited due to cultural restrictions, affecting food security and gender equity.
Niger Delta Gas flaring and oil pollution continue to destroy ecosystems and contaminate water. Communities suffer from loss of livelihood, unsafe drinking water, and poor health due to unchecked extractive activities. Students from the University of Port Harcourt’s School of Science Laboratory will help document these issues on Wikimedia projects.
Imo State Soil erosion and flooding are destroying homes, infrastructure, and farms. Sand mining and poor waste disposal contribute to environmental decay. Unemployment and oil exploration in the Ohaji/Egbema community threaten youth opportunities and community stability.
Igala Community (Kogi State) The Igala people, a major ethnic group in North-Central Nigeria, experience linguistic exclusion from critical information on environmental rights and human rights. Flooding, erosion, and land degradation remain under-documented in this region. The WikiForHumanRights 2025 campaign in Igala community will focus on translating content into the Igala language and empowering local voices to share their stories on Wikimedia platforms.
Osun State In Osun State, particularly in Ile-Ife where Obafemi Awolowo University is located, many residents struggle with limited access to clean water and poor waste management. These problems have a direct impact on people’s health, the environment, and their overall quality of life. Illegal mining along the Osun River has contaminated the water with heavy metals—like mercury, lead, and cyanide—from unauthorized gold extraction. This pollution threatens the drinking water, agriculture, and health of over 2 million people across 23 communities
Our Main Approaches to Achieve This Change: The WikiForHumanRights 2025 campaign in Nigeria will engage seven diverse Wikimedia communities in Anambra state, Imo state, the Igala-speaking regions, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile Ife, Niger Delta, Kaduna state, and Gombe state—to deepen awareness and action on environmental and human rights. Working with local community leaders and key institutional partners such as the Arewa Institute for Organization Private Department (AIOPSD) in Kaduna State, Climate Action Africa in Anambra State, the Faculty of Social Science Department of Economics in Prince Abubakar Audu University Kogi State, Urgent Concern Group in Rivers State, Plogging Nigeria in Osun State, the Institute of Ecology Osun State and Junior Chamber International Nigeria in Obafemi Awolowo University in Osun State. We will also build a national coalition for grassroots knowledge creation and advocacy.

5. Language Inclusion and Content Localization To bridge the knowledge gap, we will prioritize content development and translation in the following Nigerian languages: Igbo Yoruba Hausa Igala
Wikimedia community leaders from the stated seven communities will coordinate local language translation sprints, editing sessions, and new article creation to ensure culturally relevant, accessible content for all regions.
6. Storytelling and Outreach We will run creative awareness activities. Some of the activities we intend to to carry out are A radio interview featuring community leaders who will discuss the human rights challenges affecting their communities—and explain how they plan to participate in the campaign Community radio WhatsApp broadcasts Posters and flyers Local storytelling events Multimedia documentation (photos, videos) for Wikimedia Commons These will showcase traditional knowledge, local challenges, and community-led solutions, while uplifting voices of grassroots advocates and human rights defenders.
7. Community-Based Activities Across Regions Each community will host hybrid trainings customized for their local context: Anambra – 1 in-person, 3 online sessions Imo – 1-in-person, 3 online sessions Igala Community – 1 in-person, 3 online sessions OAU Fan Club (Ile-Ife) – 1 in-person, 3 online sessions Port Harcourt Hub (Niger Delta) – 1 in-person, 3 online sessions Kaduna Network – 1 in-person, 3 online sessions Gombe Network – 1-in-person, 3 online sessions National online training (open to all 7 communities): 6 sessions + 3 open office hours

This project is designed to actively engage Wikimedia communities across seven key regions in Nigeria: Anambra state, Imo state, the Igala-speaking areas, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife, Port Harcourt (Niger Delta), Kaduna state, and Gombe state. Local community leaders will work in close partnership with the national coordinators to drive campaign activities, mobilize participants, and strengthen engagement. They will also tap into existing project collaborations to bring new contributors into the fold. Although these seven communities serve as the primary focus, the campaign welcomes participation from other Wikimedia groups and individual volunteers across Nigeria who are interested in contributing to the initiative. To facilitate smooth communication and participant coordination, each community will utilize familiar platforms such as WhatsApp groups.
