WikiJejama was successfully implemented through a series of community-based workshops as its core activity. Overall, the project exceeded its initial targets, producing 2,923 media files on Wikimedia Commons and 1,288 Wiktionary entries, while engaging 100 participants across five locations. The project can therefore be considered a significant success in advancing the digital documentation of Lampung language and culture, while also revealing important areas for improvement for future development.
The workshops were conducted between October and December 2025 across five locations in Lampung Province, namely Bandar Lampung (29 October 2025), Bandar Jaya (9 November 2025), Pringsewu (30 November 2025), Liwa (14 December 2025), and Krui (21 December 2025). These activities were organized in collaboration with local partners, including universities, cultural communities, youth organizations, and local government institutions.
Each workshop was designed with a structured approach, beginning with an introduction to the Wikimedia movement and its platforms, including Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Indonesian Wiktionary (Wikikamus), and Lingua Libre. This session emphasized the importance of open knowledge in preserving regional languages and cultural heritage.
The workshops then continued with hands-on training sessions, where participants were guided to create Wikimedia accounts, contribute Lampung vocabulary entries to Indonesian Wiktionary, record pronunciation audio using Lingua Libre, and document cultural materials for Wikimedia Commons. Participants worked with both major dialects of the Lampung language, Api and Nyo, ensuring inclusive linguistic representation.
A distinctive strength of WikiJejama was the integration of cultural elements into several workshops. In Bandar Lampung, Liwa, and Krui, the activities featured traditional Lampung dance performances and presentations of oral literature. These cultural components not only enriched the learning experience but also strengthened participants’ emotional connection to the documentation process, contributing to higher engagement and increased content production during the sessions.
In Bandar Jaya, the workshop emphasized dialogue and knowledge exchange with members of the Muli Mekhanai community and local traditional elders. This approach was particularly effective in identifying culturally significant knowledge that has not yet been digitally documented, while also building trust with local stakeholders.
In Pringsewu, participants demonstrated strong enthusiasm and initiative during the editing session. Despite the prevalence of non-Lampung languages in daily communication, participants actively explored and documented Lampung vocabulary, indicating a strong interest in cultural revitalization among youth communities.
Across all five locations, the project successfully engaged 100 participants, including university students, members of cultural organizations, youth communities, literacy activists, and local cultural practitioners. All participants were guided to actively contribute during the workshop sessions, resulting in a high conversion rate from participants to active Wikimedia contributors.
As a result of these activities, WikiJejama contributed 2,923 media files to Wikimedia Commons and 1,288 structured lexical entries to Indonesian Wiktionary, alongside pronunciation recordings using Lingua Libre. These outputs significantly expand the representation of Lampung language and culture across Wikimedia platforms. In addition, the project increased awareness and strengthened participants’ basic capacity to contribute to Wikimedia projects.
The success of WikiJejama was supported by several effective approaches. First, strong collaboration with local partners ensured effective outreach, logistical support, and contextual relevance. Second, the integration of cultural elements such as traditional dance and oral literature made the workshops more engaging and meaningful. Third, the hands-on and guided contribution model enabled participants to produce tangible outputs during the activities. Our findings will be consolidated into a final public report—shared via Meta-Wiki, Wikimedia Indonesia, and relevant language documentation networks—to support peer learning, transparency, and replicability.
In essence, WikiJejama aims to demonstrate how collective, culturally-rooted action can enrich Wikimedia platforms while simultaneously empowering underrepresented communities to take ownership of their linguistic and cultural narratives in the digital space.
Through WikiJejama, we aimed not only to generate measurable outputs across Wikimedia platforms, but also to derive deeper insights into the sociolinguistic, technological, and pedagogical dimensions of community-based open knowledge production, particularly within the context of an underrepresented regional language such as Lampung.
Our learning process was structured around several thematic questions, and the implementation of the project has generated the following key insights:

The project successfully engaged 100 participants across five locations: Bandar Lampung, Bandar Jaya, Pringsewu, Liwa, and Krui. Participants came from diverse backgrounds, including university students, youth communities, cultural organizations, and local stakeholders. A significant proportion of participants expressed strong interest in contributing to Indonesian Wiktionary and using Lingua Libre, particularly when the activities were directly connected to their own linguistic knowledge and cultural identity. This demonstrates that community-based and culturally grounded approaches are highly effective in mobilizing participation and fostering initial contributor engagement.
In terms of audio documentation using Lingua Libre, several technological and practical challenges were identified. Device incompatibility, particularly related to browser support and microphone quality, limited some participants’ ability to record independently. As a result, participants often had to share devices or take turns during recording sessions, which affected efficiency. In addition, variations in recording environments influenced audio quality. From a sociolinguistic perspective, differences between Lampung Api and Lampung Nyo dialects required careful attention in labeling and categorization. These findings highlight the importance of stronger technical preparation, clearer guidelines, and more structured training in audio documentation workflows.
With regard to contributions to Indonesian Wiktionary, a major challenge was the reliance on source editing and template-based formatting, which can be difficult for new contributors. Many participants required intensive guidance to understand the structure and syntax of entries. Furthermore, the absence of fully standardized orthography in the Lampung language led to inconsistencies in spelling, transcription, and translation. This reflects broader methodological challenges in documenting primarily oral languages. These insights emphasize the need for adaptive facilitation methods, simplified training materials, and gradual onboarding processes tailored to beginner contributors.
The project also identified key factors that encourage sustained engagement among contributors. Intrinsic motivation—particularly a strong interest in preserving local language and cultural heritage—emerged as the most significant driver. In addition, the relatively concise and structured format of Wiktionary entries made the platform more accessible compared to other Wikimedia projects. Lingua Libre was also perceived as efficient and user-friendly once participants became familiar with it, as it enables direct recording and automatic upload. Importantly, the integration of cultural elements such as storytelling, oral traditions, and traditional performances significantly increased participants’ sense of ownership, pride, and emotional connection to the project.
These findings align strongly with the project’s broader learning objectives. In terms of content growth, the project demonstrates that decentralized, multi-location workshops can effectively generate community-driven audio documentation and lexicographic content, even in linguistically diverse and digitally underserved contexts. In terms of lexical expansion, contributions enriched Indonesian Wiktionary with culturally grounded entries that are often absent from formal academic sources, particularly in domains such as kinship, environment, and oral expressions.
The project also highlighted important methodological and sociolinguistic challenges, including dialectal variation, lack of standardized orthography, and varying levels of digital literacy. These learnings will directly inform the next phase of WikiJejama. Future improvements will include the development of more structured and accessible training modules, particularly for Wiktionary editing and Lingua Libre usage. Technical preparation will be strengthened to address device compatibility issues and improve the quality of audio documentation. The project will also explore the development of community-informed guidelines for orthography and transcription to reduce inconsistencies and improve data quality.
In addition, stronger post-workshop engagement strategies will be implemented, including mentorship systems, follow-up activities, and continued communication channels to improve contributor retention. The project will continue to prioritize culturally grounded approaches by integrating oral heritage and local knowledge into Wikimedia contributions, as this has proven highly effective in increasing engagement and fostering a sense of ownership.
Overall, WikiJejama demonstrates that open knowledge initiatives are most effective when they are participatory, culturally grounded, and context-sensitive. During the implementation of WikiJejama, several unexpected and insightful situations emerged, both positive and challenging. These experiences provided important practical lessons that significantly deepened our understanding of community-based language documentation and open knowledge production in the context of the Lampung language.
On the positive side, one of the most notable unexpected outcomes was the exceptionally high level of enthusiasm and engagement from local communities across all five locations: Bandar Lampung, Bandar Jaya, Pringsewu, Liwa, and Krui. Participants not only attended the workshops but actively contributed vocabulary, oral expressions, and culturally significant knowledge that are rarely documented in formal or academic sources. This confirmed that local communities possess rich and underutilized knowledge assets, and when provided with an inclusive, culturally relevant platform, they are highly motivated to contribute to Wikimedia projects.
In several locations—particularly Pringsewu, Liwa, and Krui—participants also demonstrated a strong emotional connection to the activities, especially when sessions incorporated elements of oral traditions such as storytelling, traditional performances, and cultural discussions. While not initially designed as a central strategy, this approach proved highly effective in increasing engagement, improving contribution quality, and strengthening participants’ sense of ownership and identity. Additionally, the project received external media coverage, which contributed to increased visibility and legitimacy at the regional level.
Another important positive insight was the critical role of local partners and community-based organizations, including Muli Mekhanai groups and educational institutions. Their involvement significantly enhanced participant mobilization, coordination, and trust-building processes. This reinforces the importance of localized collaboration and grassroots facilitation as key success factors in decentralized program implementation.
At the same time, several challenges emerged that provided valuable learning opportunities. From a technical perspective, device incompatibility and browser limitations affected participants’ ability to use Lingua Libre effectively. Not all participants were able to record independently, which required device-sharing and reduced overall efficiency. In addition, some venues were not fully conducive for audio recording due to background noise, resulting in variations in audio quality and the need for repeated recordings. These challenges highlight the importance of stronger technical preparation, including device readiness and venue assessment.
From a methodological and sociolinguistic perspective, dialectal variation between Lampung Api and Lampung Nyo introduced complexity in documentation, particularly in terms of vocabulary differences, pronunciation, and meaning. The absence of standardized orthography further contributed to inconsistencies in transcription and Wiktionary entries. These conditions required facilitators to adopt flexible and adaptive approaches, while also providing additional guidance to maintain accuracy and consistency.
Challenges were also observed in participant readiness and retention. While initial interest was high, a portion of registered participants did not attend the workshops, affecting logistical planning. In addition, many participants were new to Wikimedia projects and faced difficulties in editing Wiktionary due to its reliance on source editing and templates. This required intensive mentoring and post-session support from the organizing team.
Furthermore, the project has not yet fully established formal collaboration with language institutions or authoritative bodies in language preservation. As a result, the preparation of lexical materials—such as structured vocabulary lists—was not yet optimal, leading to some overlap in contributions and limited depth in certain semantic domains. While the project achieved strong quantitative outputs, these findings highlight opportunities to further strengthen qualitative depth in future iterations.
From these experiences, several key lessons were identified.
