Indonesia is currently experiencing a significant demographic bonus, which presents both great opportunities and challenges. If this potential, especially that of the younger generation, is not optimally utilized, it will result in great losses. On the other hand, there are still many regions in Indonesia that are underrepresented in Indonesian-language Wikimedia projects, both in terms of information coverage and visual documentation. The lack of comprehensive and reliable content limits public understanding and access to valuable knowledge. This proposal aims to make Indonesian-language Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons a trusted and comprehensive source of information and visual documentation about various regions in Indonesia. To achieve this, we will involve the younger generation, especially high school students from these regions, so that they can actively contribute to the dissemination of local knowledge and support the utilization of Indonesia's demographic bonus.
Our approach includes: 1) Improving the quality and quantity of local knowledge content on Indonesian Wikipedia and visual documentation on Wikimedia Commons through contributions from students and local communities; 2) Increasing the utilization and visibility of articles and images related to local places, culture, and history by students, educators, researchers, and the general public; and 3) Building a sustainable, skilled and dedicated community of contributors to document areas that are still underrepresented in Indonesia's digital space.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
Related to our goals and objectives, our activities are: 1) Conducting an initial content assessment to identify underrepresented topics and images related to local knowledge. We will start by mapping the existing local content coverage (e.g., culture, geography, traditions, landmarks) on Indonesian Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, focusing on selected regions. We will also conduct initial discussions with local schools, cultural offices, and several local wikimedia communities to align priority topics that reflect the uniqueness of each region; 2) Managing a capacity building program for students and teachers. We will facilitate a blended training program (offline and online) that introduces students and accompanying teachers to the basics of Wikipedia editing, writing neutral and sourced content, and uploading photos to Wikimedia Commons; 3) Conducting writing and documentation workshops in five different regions with 5 schools. In collaboration with local Wikimedia communities and schools, we will organize a series of on-site workshops. Each workshop will guide participants in researching, writing, and refining a Wikipedia article about their region. At the same time, students will be encouraged to take original photos of important places and cultural activities in their region to upload to Wikimedia Commons; 4) Organize a locally themed Wikipedia edit-a-thon and Wikicommons upload session. After each workshop, we will organize an offline edit-a-thon. Our total goal is to edit or create at least 250 new articles and upload 250 new images during the project. A public dashboard will be created to monitor participation and results; 5) Provide mentoring, incentives, and recognition. Throughout the project, experienced Wikipedians will mentor student editors. Editors who complete assigned article or photo assignments will receive digital certificates and incentives, with special recognition given to the most active and impactful contributors in each region; and 6) Conduct evaluation and reflection sessions. At the end of each regional activity, we will collect feedback via Google Forms and hold short reflection sessions with students and teachers to evaluate learning outcomes, challenges, and future opportunities for continued contribution.
